G2 Hard to shift, Problem is NOT cable
I have a G2 rear that is hard to shift in and out of gear about 50% of the time by using the shifter on the transaxle and the engine turned off. IT does have a clone engine. The problem is most likely inside the transaxle
I am confident enough to split the case. Since the clutch dog is about the only part not still available. What are the signs of a bad dog clutch. Transaxle does not grind a or pop out of gear. I can switch gears by rotating the input shaft and pushing the cart a few feet forward or backward. |

Does your new engine "idle"? If so, get used to the shifting, that axle was designed to be stopped while shifting. The clutch dog would be very evident if damaged, it has big blocky teeth that would show damage.. the shift detent ball may be sludged up? Not sure.

Re: G2 Hard to shift, Problem is NOT cable
98% of the time this is a cable issue. Either sticking (especially if cold out) or adjustment. With the engine off and while it's cold, move your shifter from forward to reverse and notice at the transaxle end if one of the cables springs is collapsed and the shifter (on the trans) only halfway. Clean and spray the crap out of the ends of the cables with WD40 at the transaxle end. They may also need adjusting at both ends (hand shifter and transaxle area) only takes one to be out a little to mess it up. Here'a breakdown of the transaxle just in case it does end up being something other than cables sticking and out of adjustment.
