Yamaha G1 Rear End Help
Just posted an update mentioning this as well in my build thread but wanted to ask the community here in Gas Yamaha if anyone could help answer a few questions about the G1 rear end!
I spilled some gear oil when I had the cart up on its side painting the frame and then decided to just drain and replace with new when I get it back together. A few questions as I prepare to get this cart going! From where do I fill the rear end? Is there a screw (for the top hole) I am by chance missing? Does it hold 1 quart? Should I open the case and remove the governor components? Thanks for the help as always! |

Re: Yamaha G1 Rear End Help
In the first picture, the "level bolt" is the one just below the axle tube (has a gasket on it), you fill the gear lube thru the "breather/vent tube" opening.

Re: Yamaha G1 Rear End Help
In the owner's manual, if I remember correctly, it holds 27oz. 90 weight gear oil. I used 75-90 synthetic gear oil in mine.

Re: Yamaha G1 Rear End Help
Thanks guys! Makes a little more sense.
Do I actually fill through the vent tube, or remove and then use that hole? Am I missing a screw in that mystery hole or is that supposed to be open? Maybe something was bolted to the case that I removed tearing it down, but as stated it is open and leaked oil when on its side. Am I cool to run a clone motor with the governor gear in the rear? Attached photos for clarity and thanks again for the help! |

Re: Yamaha G1 Rear End Help
The rubber plug with the hose to your oil tank on the fender (unless the oil injection was removed) is the fill hole, fill it until it comes out the other bolt (check level bolt) with gasket on it then you are done. I don't know what your mystery hole is, but there should not be an open hole that actually goes inside. Do this with the rear level as you can so the oil can go where it needs to be at right levels. Try to get the vent tube to go up and then back down, it will help keep the oil in it if you get on large angles or run it at top speeds. The overflow from the injection tank ran into it so it didn't go on the pretty golf course grass.
You can take the governor parts out, but most people never do and have no problems. Its up to you. It is extremely rare to have an issue with it but some say you should take them out. I have run my G9 since '99 with it unhooked and still in there. |

I did remove the oil injection, but for some reason thought it overflowed to the carb or something? Either way, the vent hose is my only opening other than the mystery hole. Guess I'll fill through one of those lol Good to hear about the Gov. - I'll leave it be and if for some reason the whole thing blows, gives me a perfect excuse to swap the rear end for something with reverse and probably low ratio gears!! Hopefully I'll be able to enjoy it as is for a while! Had the cart since Nov/Dec and its about to run for the first time in I don't know how many years! |

Re: Yamaha G1 Rear End Help
Get on that cart and take a ride! That is the fun that makes it worthwhile. G1 was a tank of a cart, they seem to last nearly forever. They were noisy and stinky and didn't ride the best, and I jumped a lot of them in my younger days and never broke one.

clutch side black hose is vent and goes up and points down. your mystery hole is for the oil tank over flow fitting (clear hose) |

Mine is a 1979 and still super solid less a little surface rust here and there, but i cleaned it all up and protected with a couple heavy coats of rustoleum. Spent a good bit of time cleaning up and painting everything. SO ready to put it all together! |

Re: Yamaha G1 Rear End Help
The G1 I saw the tank went into the rubber part, must have changed at some point.
G1 were fun carts I had one that did over 30 and all stock on the outside. Had some good times way back then, once drove one across a frozen lake and back lol. It was like 3 miles down the road to get to it, not sure what we were thinking, people must have been laughing if they saw us. |
