Default 1995 Yamaha G9 - needs choke & blue smokes

Hi guys, finally have gotten round to my first (hopefully in the right place!) post.

As the title says, I have a 1995 Yamaha G9. Last year I lifted it and now it seems to have developed a lack of power, continuous need for the choke and a blue smoke trail when driving along. I assume Piston rings but would appreciate any input from those that know before I go pulling the engine apart.

Any help appreciated.

Change the oil and put exactly one quart in and then remark your dip stick lift change the full Mark and they don't like extra oil as for choke I'd pull the carb off and give it a good cleaning and pull the Jets and blow forced air through the passages

I agree with Spicy. Probably overfilled with oil. Check the air box for oil also. May need a good cleaning as well. And if you pull the carb off, be very very careful not to break the spacer between the carb and intake. Just snug the two 10 mm nuts on reinstall. I'd try just spray it out with carb cleaner first and get a new plug.

If that does not work you might be up to a rebuild or swapping the engine. You can also change the spring in the secondary or increase the preload to help deal with the loss of torque from the lift. I'd say put a umax spring in it but suddenly they raised the price of them from 15 to 66.

Guess they got wise to this. I hadn't noticed lately. Thanks for that info.

Spriddle - thanks for the advice, i dropped the oil and refilled last night with exactly 0.9L so hopefully that will help. It deffinitely needed changing anyway so can't have hurt! I opened up the air box and there was a very small amount of oil residue in there so cleaned all that out. I have a friend with one of those sonic cleaner things so I think I'll give the carb to him to get a full clean done.

Sho - Thanks for the input. I put a bigger spring in the clutch when I fitted the lift, bought the one from Jakes as it could come in the same delivery - it's a pain that I can't buy any of the proper mods in the UK!!

We just saw it, can't believe it but online dealers also raised it way up. Other springs are still 15 range go figure. It is 10yr since the last model umax if that has anything to do with it. I should sell mine as this clutch does not like it, but what if I get a different clutch that does lol.
