Intro- G9 about to get a 420 swap
Hey everyone
Name's Dan and I am in Austin Texas and back in nov my 1989 Yamaha G9 froze up on me, not surprised after the stuff it has gone through. After looking at the rebuild kits I think I am going to swap in a 420 instead. This past week I pulled out the motor and got into it a little bit but I think I am ready for a swap. I have just started searching the forums for a good build thread with lots of details but havent come across it yet. If anyone knows of one that would be great! I havent got the motor yet, but I may this week. Not sure how involved this is going to be just yet or what the best route to go is. I have seem some that just swap in the motor and others that keep the alternator/starter and gas tank etc. Which seems ideal but just depends on how complicated it all gets! I have a decent home shop so I can do quite a bit in it. I do have a lathe but I am not machinist just self taught. Same with the welder :) But for the most part I should be able to make most of what I need as long as it is not too complicated. |

Dan, Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to BGW. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, wives’, husbands, girlfriend’s and boyfriends here don't care....and take it easy.
oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here. Welcome!! |

its all pretty straight foward. just buy the vegas carts engine plate and it bolts right in and drop the motor in. you can keep the stock gas tank which is ideal. but ill do some searching to see if i can find the thread i read.

Thanks Macsman
I took a look and that motor mount plate from vegas is $99, I think I will be making my own! Although that is a nice looking one. I plan to start a build thread as I just picked up the motor today from HF, it was on sale so I couldnt pass it up! |

You will have to figure out which direction to go in for your clutch. Choose wisely.

Re: Intro- G9 about to get a 420 swap
kos --
I took a road trip from north east Texas to Meridian this week I found out they local boys got that freaking mad bomber in Pfluegerville. Congrats on that. Sorry you had to deal with that. I converted my G9 to a 420 Lifan from Home Depot. Decided to buy a new clutch so I wouldn't have to cut up the existing cart. I came to that decision cause I wasn't sure I would like the new engine/speed and wanted the option of going back to stock. I also read several threads on here about staying with the old clutch or going with the new one. Seemed to me like getting a new one is more plug and play. Staying with the old one means cutting (which sounds like something you'd be able to do) but also you'd want to check the internals on the clutch and probably rehab. That means you are still spending money, just on different parts. You'd be able to recoup some of your investment by selling your old engine parts - muffler, airbox, etc. I did try the vegas airbox-flat one in black. Didn't like it. No matter what I do it obstructs the shock and already has a spot of pretty black paint rubbed off. The Vegas Carts guys are wonderful to work with so this is probably an issue with the owner of the cart and her limited knowledge of how to futz with things. LOL I also replaced the stock carb with a more easily adjustable carb from Vegas Carts and really glad I did. Lots of build threads on the Clone Swap forum |
