Default Lost tail pipe

07 Yamaha Drive. Lost tail pipe and it started to backfire. Is the missing tailpipe causing this? Thanks

Lost tailpipe like broken or missing muffler? If so, yes.

Muffler is ok, the pipe is broke off even with the bottom of the muffler. Not sure how long the stub is supposed to be, but it is gone.

That won't cause backfire, unless the muffler-breaking trauma caused any sort of air leak at the exhaust port on the head. I usually find a proper carb adjustment cures most backfire problems. Key is to make sure the throttle blade fully closes when the throttle is released, and the carb does not begin to open before the starter starts cranking when pedal is just barely pressed.

The problem I’m having is this:
After I stop at a stop sign for maybe 30 seconds or so, as soon as i hit the gas, there is a loud backfire. It doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, it scares the dog and my wife. I noticed that the exhaust pipe had broken off and thought that might be the cause?

Fuel must be building up in muffler somehow

I'd start with a good tune up, adjust the valves, and adjust the carb throttle cable so it completely closes when let off the pedal. Is your muffler rusted? It may be rusted out and somewhat clogged also. Rusted and clogged muffler really shouldn't cause a backfire but it will definitely decrease power.
