Cowl Rubber Trim and Backing Strip
Had my cowl off for steering work, noticed some rust where the rubber trim meets the floor. Separated the strap steel lining from the rubber belt, de-rusted, painted with zinc primer, top-coated with rattle can paint. Lessons learned:
1. Not all rust dissolving liquids are the same. Evaporate-rust is mild and attacks only the rust but leaves behind a rust preventive coating that may inhibit paint adhesion. Metal Rescue is similar but without the RP. Rustoleum brand is just overpriced acid. It stripped away the cadmium plating from the bottom of each vertical backing strip where it had soaked in a soda can of the acid. 2. Soak rusty joints in PB Blaster for as long as it takes to soften the rust. Don't break those studs off with the nuts. But if you do you can buy replacement studs from specialty hardware suppliers. Grind away and drill away the remnant, tack weld in replacement. 3. I looked for replacement belting and backing strips. Couldn't find with a casual web search. Maybe site sponsors can special order if needed. If you see rust at bottoms of rubber strips you may want to get after it sooner rather than later. |
