Default 1982 G1 engine rebuild

Hello,

I have seen a couple old posts in here about not being able to find parts for the 1982 top end. I just recently picked up an 82, not knowing that it is a one off. It has low compression, somewhere in the neighborhood of 40psi. Not good.... So what are my options? I really don't want to sink a ton of money into this cart. If the decisions go down the high cost road I will have to reevaluate what I am doing with this cart. Any thoughts are appreciated. I have seen suggestions of larger piston and bore the jug out. If this is the best route what is an optimal size? Or am I better off looking for a replacement 1983+ motor for mine?

Id go the oversized Piston route but first off you need to pull it apart and see what size Piston is in it it should be stamped with the size on the top of the Piston all you really need is to go up a size of two

You can get the 1979-81/83-89 engine top end kit (jug, piston, rings, gaskets) and a carburetor joint (that connects the carb to the jug). They are common on e-bay. Plowman's carts has a hop up kit I wish I had known about when I did mine. Do your crankshaft seals while you are at it.

Thanks everyone! Everyone keeps recommending plowman. I will definitely be checking his site out and/or contacting him. Anything else to watch out for??

i think the cylinder head is different a larger chamber which decreases compression . you can have it milled a few thousands but I'm not sure by how exactly. guessing ten thousandths??
even with it being a lower compression engine, properly rebuilt its a very reliable little engine.

Here is my update, I am trying to get a hold of Don at Plowmans (we keep missing each other on the phone). A couple thoughts:

SpicyUnicorn: Once I pull it apart I will have a better understanding of what I have. How do I know what piston to buy? Is there larger pistons specifically for this motor or am I looking for an aftermarket upsized piston?

GraveDiesel: Since I have not talked to Don yet I am very interested in this hop up kit. Can you elaborate how this works? It is my understanding that the '82 has a different bolt pattern for something (I am not sure if it is the jug to the crankcase or the head to the jug). If this is true how does this hop up kit work?

Mikeasis: Thanks for the info and I might have to look into milling if the compression is too low with a new piston (if I go that route). Also it is good to hear these motors are reliable.

Thanks again for all the input and help provided here!

Plowman will know for sure if it will work. I purchased my latest cart thinking it was a 1980, but it is actually a 1982, so I will also be looking into the upgrade kit. I have an old jug and piston from my 1981, so I will compare them when I get this cart up on the lift to do the crankshaft seals. It does currently run pretty well but is definitely "different" in running characteristics.

Thanks, I'm interested in your comparison once you get into the '82.

I'm 99.9% sure the head and jug are interchaneable. The head is different i think due to the chamber being larger in 82 for lower compression. The jug may be the same but could have different port timing?? along with a restricted intake port. the intake boot is different for sure but from what ive seen, people have had no problems using the readily available 79-81+83 up intake, carb and exhaust. These items will just help it breath better and when used as a combo i doubt would require much if any carb adjustments

I have 2 82 engines that both need work and my runner is an 84 but I'm not willing to tear it down for comparison. Its the strangest thing but every time a G1 comes up for sale close to me the **** thing is an 82!
