starter going bad?
how can you tell if the starter is going bad. hit the pedal and sometimesit turns right over but others it just sits and squeals a bit but eventually turns over and runs. thought maybe battery but voltage checks out. 03 g22

Re: starter going bad?
9 times out of 10 when you hit the peddle and you hear a squeal it's a loose starter belt

Re: starter going bad?
Yep, watch the pulley, it's probably spinning without the belt moving. The other common problem is worn out brushes, but that doesn't make noise as far as I have seen.

Re: starter going bad?
Mine does that too, since changing the primary. Yesterday I confirmed that nothing is turning or spinning, but it's trying and whining a bit. I have new brushes to install so I'll let you know if anything changes.

Re: starter going bad?
Put in brushes that I got from Amazon. Pigtails were longer than what I took out but they fit. I placed the insulated sleeves toward the sleeves and tucked the bare wire down beside the brushes.
Didn't change how my starter ran but changing the belt tension probably did. As is my custom every electrical connection got some dialectic grease (except the brush screws), and every mounting bolt got some anti-seize. Brushes were near the wear limit so glad to have it done. |

Re: starter going bad?
You'll see three mounting bolts by the top of the starter. Loosen those, rotate the starter to tighten the belt then tighten the bolts back up. Simple job.
