Default G1a5 yamaha, new starter causing problems.

I installed a new starter generator on the cart and i have the correct wiring diagram on my phone and checked it three times. When it starts and takes off seconds into driving it dies out and if i pull the brush cover i see a little smoke. The only reason i replaced it is because the nut on the drive side came loose and it messed up the shaft and pulley on the old starter generator, before that the old one ran great. I can't figure this out to save my life.

Aftermarket starter/generators are often junk, I have found them with dead shorts inside right out of the box.

Rule of thumb is: Where ever the smoke is coming from that is where the problem is.

I agree with CGtech, if its aftermarket, trash it and get a OEM one.

Well, I always just keep putting bigger fuses in, the wire that is smoking will lead me to the problem

You know your getting power to the starter....its smoking. Something inside the starter is not happy, hence the smoke.

Just would hate to waste the money if it's not 100%for sure the issue. Not sure if it's something at the solenoids or starter

Follow the smoke trail, it will lead you to the bad part.

Look at it this way. In your effort to save $150 bucks, you wasted $150 dollars. Those of us that work on carts everyday, see this all the time, the internet can be a good thing or a bad thing. In the golf cart world it can be a bad thing. All these aftermarket parts that are garbage, make me a ton of money as I go to these customers trying to save a few bucks, and change the parts back to a OEM piece.

Your starter is smoking, its not suppose to do that. Send it back and get a refund, Im sure they are use to it.

Smoking from brushes, likely one of 2 issues. Either the brush or wire to it is grounding out. Or its hooked up wrong.
