Default G1 Drive Belt

I have new to be me mid 80's G1. My neighbor said's my drive belt is to tight. Should it have some play in it when not in use? When the cart is sitting it is very tight. When you barley touch the gas it takes right off. I want to order a new belt but wanted some opinions or known facts. Does anyone know if this should have some slop in it when not in use? Proper belt size? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and happy riding! I did roll it off last night and trust me that was not as easy as it looks, it is very tight.

The center of the primary clutch on the engine has a bearing, so you can push the cart and the belt will spin on the bearing. The belt should not be hitting the sides of the primary pulley at this time. If it engages too quickly, the primary pulley halves may be too close together at idle/when off.

ok thank you
1 , so to my understanding the belt needs to be loose enough so it basically is not touching the edge of the primary clutch pulley when sitting or at idle
