Default G1 Runs Very Rough

Hello I have a 1979 Yamaha G1 cart. Same one from the “Reverse” Thread. The last major task from the refurb project was the brake pads. I put some Yamaha pads on yesterday. Sadly It runs very rough. I’m not sure where to start, as this is outside my wheelhouse.

Attached is a YouTube video of the maiden trip. It wouldn’t run unless the choke cable was pulled out. There is a very short pedal travel between full speed and complete stop. Also the governor has been removed.

Many thanks
Luke

You may blow it up quickly without a governor...just sayin.

Also, the governor gives you more pedal travel vs. the movement range of the throttle plate

If your having to choke it a lot its more than likely crank seals

I'm sorry to hear that. If the throttle cable is connected directly to the carb then that will cause you to have a short range of motion in the pedal and also it will be very weird when starting like you noticed.

On mine, it needs choked about half until it warms up, or if it's after the first couple starts, you can just mash the gas then back off after it fires. It's weird too but not as undriveable as yours.

These engines are based on the snow sled enticer/bravo250 and ive heard tell that they don't mind the high rpm's. That said id have oil injection deleted and the fuel premixed at 50:1 but that's just me.

I had a cart service man out to see if he could see what's what. We did find a broken oil pump so I'll abandon it and move to pre-mixing fuel. Next I called Don Plowman (I purchased a muffler from Don) to see if he'd take a look at the video. ....That took everything in a hole different direction.

The fact that the cart constantly backs out a gear then snaps in and chirps the tires means the clutch is gone. At lease according to Don. He makes and sells clutches
So I bought one. If left they way it is it can snap the axel and that's big money plus the clutch to boot.

Have you run a compression test?

P.S. always start with a compression test
