Default Yamaha G16 falls flat when floored

Hi everyone,

I've started a G16 build from an old cart that someone had been using as a farm utility cart with home made lift kit and all. I have cleaned everything up and and trying to get the engine dialed in before i go any further with body and new lift etc. The original carb and fuel pump were giving me problems so i put in cheap ones from amazon in order to test things out before i rebuild the old carb. It starts and runs well without choke if you dip slowly into the gas pedal. If you hammer on the gas from a stop in just turns over and doesnt fire unless you ease off or pump it a bit. Also, if im cruising along i can slowly dip into the pedal and get to a pretty good speed and decent revs but if i cruise at half throttle and then punch it, it just dies until i ease out again. I'm guessing this is going to be a carb adjustment but i know nothing about the adjustments on these things. Any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks!
Matt

Don't waste your time trying to "dial in" the china carb. This sounds pretty typical of a bad carb issue.

Spend a few minutes, and rebuild the old OEM carb. If you still have issues, we can help you try and pin those down. But trying to chase down issues with a carb we know is 99% junk right out of the box is just asking to chase your own tail in circles.

Perfect. I will get a carb kit ordered up and rebuild this old one and go from there. You guys are so quick to reply! I appreciate it!

This has been a long time in the works, but i'm still having some issues. Since i last posted this i had tried to clean up and rebuild the OEM carb without any luck - wouldn't start or run at all. Bought a cheap carb just to keep working on the cart and have it mobile. Cheap carb seemed to work ok but i only drove for short periods of time. I don't golf but a couple freinds borrowed it for a tournament and it completely went dead after the 9th hole. The said it was running really rich, bit of blue smoke and could smell gas. It ended up being an ignition and spark problem that killed it (not the spark plug but it was pretty black). I replaced a handful of ignition parts and dialed in the carb a little bit better.

Same guys borrowed it again (suckers for punishment) for another tournament and it ran the entire time but again was rich and smokey and had no power on the hills. Barely moved the two guys up the hill. Plus some backfiring.

I have just replaced the cheap carb with a brand new Yamaha OEM carb at the tune of $450 Canadian. Still not running top notch. Hesitates a fair bit in forward gear but is more peppy in reverse.

The air cleaner is sealed well. the choke fully returns. Belt is new. Governor is drilled out. Not sure what is next to get this figured out.

Would valve adjustment affect this?

TLDR: Cart still not running right after installing new OEM carb. Seems to run rich. Prior to carb change had no power on the hills. Haven't tested on a hill since new carb. What next?
