Default G16 Build

So years ago i rebuilt a G1 to resemble a Jurassic Park Jeep but after it flipped out of my truck on the highway at 110km/h I was a little discouraged to start again.

A few years ago i found a G16 that had been abused as a bush cart and was pretty beat up but they only wanted $400 so i grabbed it. This winter i decided i needed a little after work project to keep me from watching TV and being lazy.

So, I went out to my property and brought it home to work on.

Pulled the old chopped roof and got it to fire up after putting on a new fuel pump and a Chinese carb (for testing purposes. The stock one will be back on soon)

The previous owner painted it camo and it was peeling off so sanding down completely was a must. Plus, there were deep cuts in the plastic and it had been hit hard and cracked at the center brace.

Took it to my shop to clean it up and after i got it running and topped up on oil found out there was a bad leak.

Replaced the crank case gasket and cleaned up the frame and welded in a new battery tray.

Painted the frame and the front end... You will also notice the home made lift kit the PO put in. Of course he welded it in.

Christmas holidays made for some good progress. Cut out the old lift and welded things back to stock on the rear and installed a Rhox 6" lift and Jake's HD springs.

New shock mounts had to be built and welded in on the front.

Babysitting my nephew at the time. I just put on a classic Die Hard Xmas movie and let him learn some new words.

Front lift in.

Sanded the rear body down.

Skimmed the front with "icing" and sanded and primed and sanded and primed etc.

Skimmed the rear body a couple of times and sprayed bed liner on the spots I noticed had the most wear and tear. Also undercoated the front and rear bodies.

Sprayed the body in a metallic dark gray. Followed it with numerous coats of clear. Not too happy with how the clear turned out even after wet sanding and polishing so i will likely respray it with a two part product in the summer. Everything so far has been duplicolor bombs.

New wheels and tires arrived - 23" tires on 12" wheels.

New Xmas present steering wheel and adapter installed and set the body in place.

Got my seats back from the upholsterer and temporarily mounted them to the old seat brackets the PO cut off at seat level. I have a new basket and brackets to put on the gain the basket back and have something proper to mount the G22 roof and braces that i bought to.

I hammered out some diamond plate rocker panels and will also do a kick plate on the body. Roof is painted black now and i have a marine stereo setup to go into it. Headlight and taillight kit is also here and on the to-do list.

Looks great! Perfect example why I like buying pieces of junk like that for cheap and building something nice out of it. :) why spend a bunch of money buying something new and shiny, this is way more fun!

Nice build! I am severely jealous of your shop you are working in!

Cart flew out the back of your truck! Bet that was a scary moment!!!!! Did you have it strapped down like you have this one?

Before and Afters in that link.

I had it in the back of a pickup the back strapped forward to hold it in. But on the g1 the whole roof and body tip back and i forgot to strap down the roof. The roof and body tipped back and flipped the cart right over onto it's roof, pivoting on the rear straps. It hit the pavement, and was the dragging behind my truck. I was passing at the time. I think bthe guy beside me may have had to change his underwear. Lesson learned basket you can see with the more recent cart - two straps on the front, two on the back and one over the top.

Yeah, lesson learned, and hopefully by others who read these threads. Not that much damage seemed to be done to that cart, considering...

My friends always make fun of me for the ample amount of straps I use when hauling things in my truck. Oh, well! Rather be safe than sorry! Glad everyone came out of the incident safe!
