Is “haltingly” the right term for this?
Back after a couple years with a new issue.
1997 Yamaha G16 that I manage to keep running on a somewhat remote island, thanks in LARGE part to this site. Latest issue....when i press gas, she’ll run for a bit, then simply decelerate, then quickly accelerate back up again....when in neutral, same thing, give her gas and she runs for 3-4 seconds, then drops off (engine remains running), then back up to previous revs. In above scenario, give a little less gas, then the time periods are ....runs good for 2-3 seconds, then backs off for 1 or 2, then back up to speed. Makes for a jerky ride, but at least she runs. Cart does sit unused for 3 months at a time. Carb is not a Yamaha, but would sure hate to spend the bucks for an OEM, and then realize there might be some other things to look at first. Any help/advice is much appreciated and thanks in advance. |

If you still have the original carb around, by all means, clean that one up and put it back on, Im sure there is nothing wrong with it.
If not, clean out the carb you have and the pulser line and see if that doesn't fix your issue |

Almost sounds like a bad rev limiter.
If it sits for a long time, there could be grime in the carb caused by water sitting in the bowl. Usually that causes the main jet to clog and blocks fuel flow. A good cleaning of the carb bowl and jet might help. |

Re: Is “haltingly” the right term for this?
Yamaha from 1996 until FI models have no "rev limiter", this ain't no junky club car gasser. The TCI ignition just does it's spark thing, to all the rpms the engine can stand. The typical failure mode of the TCI is "heat up, stop, cool down, go again, repeat". It usually starts as a "only does it once in a while", then gets more & more frequent until it's every 45 seconds (if you can stand it that long- I once drove one to that point because I knew exactly what was up, but didn't want to do the work of removing the air shroud to change it). Lol Yamaha problems VS club car problems.... Could this be a funky aftermarket TCI, cause those are garbage.

That TCI thing kinda sounds like a bad rev limiter!
