Default G16 carb is soaked with something

Hi, so I have a Yamaha G16 golf cart that started to run a little rough. I would stall while driving and when I lifted the seat I saw the carb socked in something (I'm guessing oil, can't tell from the smell). What do you think is wrong, it hesitates a lot when driving. Another thing is that its top speed is only 11 Mph with a GPS app, and accelerates really slow. Thanks

It's tough to diagnose with the info you provided. The attachments wouldn't open.

1. Check compression
2. Check fuel, new fuel is best
3. Check spark, replace plug if old
4. Check air filter, replace if old

If you have good compression, good fuel, good spark, good air....it should run. Start there and see where you're at.

You can borrow a compression gauge at your local parts store.

Sorry, I wasn't so descriptive, the cart runs. The hesitation, the liquid on the carb, and it being slow is the only issue. I think I fixed the pictures.

what a mess!

I think I would start with some degreaser and a pressure washer and clean everything so you can try and see where it's coming from.

Does it smell like gas? or feel like oil?

If it were leaking down the bowl gasket it's pretty easy to say. But I'm not sure why it would be soaked around the springs and linkages on the top of the carburetor? IT would help to know exactly what it is though.

Thanks, it definitely feels like oil and to my surprise the same color as the oil in the dipstick. If its oil what could that mean, also I have no clue where the leak is coming from.

A good place to start looking is the valve cover and it's gasket. It is easy enough to clean around it and test ride it some and see if the oil returns. If that is the case your cooling fins under the shrouds are full of gunk. That needs to be attended to as the subsequent over heating will shorten engine life.

Agreed.

Temporarily you can get a can of brake cleaner and hose the valve cover and carb off really really well, so at least that is clean. Then take it for a short ride and you should be able to see where it's coming from.

But I would still recommend a big bottle of degreaser and a pressure washer. Go to town. If you get ignition stuff wet it might not be happy when you go to start it, but it will be fine once it dries out. There's nothing in there that absolutely can not get wet.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to do a deep clean of everything and see where it's coming from.

Ok, I looked in the valve cover and the gasket by the carb is ripped. Thanks for your help. One more problem though, there is old tubing in the carb gas intake. is there any way I can take that out. also, some of the oil got in the carb by the float. Do you think the carb is toast and get a new one or try to fix it.

No don't replace it, the carb should be fine. Just take it apart and clean it out real well

Not sure exactly what hose you're talking about, but new fuel lines definitely wouldn't hurt anything. Just make sure to get the correct size.
