Default G1 Minimal Speed Gains

Hello everyone. My father and I have just completed our G1 build and are having an issue with speed. Current setup as follows
-Team Clutches from Plowman's
-Plowman's carb upgrade (bigger jets)
-Governor removed
-Plowman's exhaust
But we still can't see speed gains from it. On the other hand, my uncle has a G1 that will walk all over us. His is stock besides the governor removed.

Any help/tips would be appreciated. It runs great though, runs smooth, not lacking power by any means just no speed to it.

What secondary clutch spring are you using? Make sure the clutches aee completely shifting out.

what is the top speed currently? how did you "remove" the governor
jack it up and make sure the clutches are operating properly

Off the top of my head I don't know what springs it has. Clutches are engaging fully and backing off like they should, I run Team Clutches on my snowmobile so I know how they are supposed to function. I can get a top speed tonight, I would say around 20mph, not much more.

A stock G1 with no governor with stock tires should go 25-30 mph. With mods and bigger tires you can approach 35 mph, some have gotten over 40 mph without too much work.

I'm assuming you have good compression and you are using the stock 2 cycle oiler? If you premix, use a good air cooled 2 cycle synthetic and mix at 85:1 or even 100:1.

Does your uncle use the same clutches as you? If not, I'd be looking at the clutches and rpm.

Are you running a tachometer? What kind of rpm are you getting?

How do you know you're clutches are shifting out fully? Have you observed them while driving? With a load the clutches will shift differently than at an idle.

The cylinder bore size is the same however the intake tract and reeds are smaller. What year G1? My 82 has some work close to what you have and with 22" tires I get 20mph. 82 has a smaller cylinder and will be a tick slower in my opinion. I tried a torque spring in my secondary and it would not shift fully under load but it would with the wheels off the ground so I went back to the stocker. Are you sure the carb butterfly is going to WOT?

Do you still have the exhaust butterfly if so is it working properly? You may want to remove it.

Good thought. Either remove it or wire it open.

Don't discount a clutch issue. If your clutches aren't opening / closing properly they will hold the engine back.
