81 G1 Eating grounds
My 81 G1 is burning up grounds, this is my first posting (besides intro) I am reading 12v when I check motor casing to ground and the same when I check my starter gen. to ground. I have verified that I have a good chasis ground and all wiring connections after making wiring repairs, same result, wires buring .I know I have to have a dirrect short but I've disconnected EVERYTHING except the starter where I still have the 12 v to case ground . I have also tried to get a wiring diagram using links I've seen posted without much luck.Any help would be great
P.S An old boy at a starter, rewind shop said I may have a bad shunt coil in the starter(never heard of this or its purpose)Can any one tell me how to test the shunt coil or the starter before I dish out the big bucks. Thanks Again |

Re: 81 G1 Eating grounds
A starter shop should be able to test your starter/generator. I agree, it is a short somewhere. Have you removed the starter, taken it apart, or anything?

Re: 81 G1 Eating grounds
The guy at the rebuild shop said he doesn't mess with these (kinda weird) but he could get them for around $169.Yes , I removed the starter from mounting and hooked up electrical positive and neg only and my 12v to case ground on the main motor went away,so I'm thinking battery power was being passed through the frame to the main motor. But I was hoping to be able to test this for sure b-4 writing the check,I don't mind spending it,but I like to know for sure that I have too before I do. Does any one have any more links for the wiring schematic???
Thanks. |

Re: 81 G1 Eating grounds
I would check the bushing insulatrs on the studs and check none had been twisted.

Re: 81 G1 Eating grounds
I think I'd check another auto electrical shop if that starter-tech doesn't know how to work on them.

Re: 81 G1 Eating grounds
HELP HAS ARRIVED!
Just wanted to thank all that replied. I did check the terminal insulators on the advise of DOOmsman (unfortunately it wasn't that easy). SPRIDDLE hooked me up with a schematic,so hopefully I can get this thing figured out.I'm not much of a computer guy but this website is pretty cool how you guys take the time to help out people you don't know,as I told Spriddle,I hope I can learn this cart inside and out and be able to help someone myself.I'll be sure to keep u updated on my progress. Have a good night' Quiktripman |
