Default Help with G1 Crank Seals

I have figured out the crank seals are bad. I have most of the stuff torn down, and am down to magneto side and clutch side. I have the big nut off the magneto side, but to get the bolt off the clutch side the motor turns and I was wondering if there was some way to keep the motor from turning so I can turn the bolt? I am afraid if I use a shim of some sort it will break something.
I also understand that I need a clutch puller. I will use the loaner program for that.
If anyone has any pictures of this process to help me out, I would be so greatful! Thanks in advance for all you help!!

This is how I do it. Take the spark plug out and turn the crank until the piston is at the bottom of the stroke (a long screwdriver will tell you when its at the bottom). Feed clean fray free rope into the cylinder until it is close to full, make sure you still have rope sticking out of the spark plug hole. As you turn the crank the piston will compress on the rope well before it hits the top of the cylinder.

Is the clutch puller the only way to get the clutch off or is there another way it can be done???

If you are lucky, a couple taps with a plastic or rubber hammer may do the trick. This has never worked for me, I always have needed the puller.

Good idea. I'll have to remember this myself. I really like it when you guys post your tips and tricks. I usually use an impact on the clutch bolts but this would be handy when an impact is not available.

Hey Fatdog how did you come to find out the seals were bad. I cant get my 81 G1 to idol at all. It has great pulling power and very high top end but idoling forget it I always have to pedal the gas pedal at low speeds. Does this sound like I need seals anyone?
Thank you.

Didn't think the seals were bad, Upon inspection saw discoloration on the fly wheel side cover. Took off cover and found the fan cowling was covered in gunked up oil. Can I just replace the seals on this side only? Where can I get the seal? The site sponsors don't have it.

I got G1 seals from cart parts plus, site sponsor. They don't list everything on their website. Call them.
