Default Exhaust Smell

I have G3 and we are getting the smell of exhaust in the cabin. It's enough that after driving it around for 10-15 minutes we have to stop because it becomes to much. I was thinking maybe the exhaust was clogged so I tried the muffler BBQ. Flames came out of the pipe for a good 45 minutes, I let it cool and hit on concrete and with a rubber mallet but not much came out. I reinstalled and it didn't change anything.

I'm at a bot of a loss at this point. Is it possible that since (at least to my knowledge and from the looks of the muffler) the it had never been cooked before that it is clogged beyond repair? Any other suggestions on what I could check?

Any suggestion or help is greatly appreciated.

After you bbq it, there's still quite a bit of soot leftover in there. You'll have to drive it pretty hard for a bit to blow the rest of it out.

Did you let it cook until it stopped smoking on its own? If you took it out before it was done smoking on its own then it's still got crud in there. I had a kawasaki i recently bbq'd that went out on its own after about 20-30 minutes. Didn't smoke at all after. I also bbq'd the muffler on my kids LT80 4wheeler. It smoked for 10 minutes, blew flames for another 45 minutes, and then smoked another 20 before it stopped. Made a HUGE difference in how the bike runs!

Also, are you running the oil injection still? or premixing your own oil? If you premix, what ratio are you premixing to?

I let it go until the it stopped smoking, took another 30-45 minutes after the flames went out. It seemed to run a little better after I reinstalled but it didn't solve the problem like I had hoped. I ran a steel flex pipe from the exhaust to the back of the cart hoping that would help as well but it didn't.

I try running it hard but our campground has a 5 mile/hr speed limit in most areas so it's difficult to run like that for a long period of time.

I'm still running the oil injection.

I've thought of putting the rear end up on blocks and running it so I can try to determine where the exhaust is coming from.

Does it smoke much? It's possible the oil injection is dumping too much oil into it. When the oil injection pumps fail, it's one of 2 ways. Either they just stop pumping completely (in which case you'll know they've failed because the engine seizes) or they pump excessive amounts of oil in. This is what happened to my kids LT80. way too much oil and filled the muffler.

I never trust the oil injection. Your best bet is to ditch it, cap off where the oil line goes into the intake and premix your own gas. General consensus that i've seen is around 100:1 ratio but that's always a bit of a debate... I've never owned a G1 so one of those guys would be a lot better to advise ratio than I, but I personally like the smell of 2stroke :)

It doesn't appear to smoke much but I will pay closer attention this weekend.

Fitting it with a rear window may help. Having only a windshield creates a low pressure area in the cabin, that tends to pull exhaust right in there.

Ever notice how vans generally don't have "pop out" windows on the back doors anymore, like they did in the old days? There's a reason why....

Interesting. I have the back windows but they're not installed. I'll try putting them in this weekend. Thank you.

I installed the rear window and it seemed to help. Caught the smell once in a while but nearly as bad as it was.

I didn't notice it smoking much but I may look into capping off the oil injection over the winter when I take it home. I'm far from a mechanic so there may future postings on exactly what to do.

Thanks for your help.
