Default Yamaha G16 Making loud knocking noise

I have a yamaha G 16 that is making a loud knocking noise. I just replaced the drive belt because that is what someone told me was wrong but the cart is still making the same noise. If I take the belt off the noise stops. Please help. Thanks

Sounds like you eliminated the engine and primary clutch. See if you can move the secondary clutch "up/down/sideways" may be a bad input shaft bearing. Also could be the f/r cables are not engaging it into full forward or reverse. Normally, you would have a "growling noise" and a "vibration" if you had secondary clutch problems. Let us know what you find. Dave

This is my first post, but I believe I have the same problem. I followed your methods, ruled out the primary clutch and engine. I also removed the back cover to get a good look at the secondary clutch. I noticed the secondary clutch rubbing against the transaxle housing (or a large bolt which sticks out of it, just a little). After I removed the secondary clutch, I found that near the shaft teeth, there is a small cowl/ridge which is partially broken/missing. That part was acting as the bushing/buffer to keep my secondary clutch from grinding against the transaxle housing bolt. Lots of metal shavings there. The bad news is that I looked up the price for this part/assembly and we're talking about $450 or so.....plus I really need the service manual to make sure I am doing it correctly. I tried to attach a picture. The missing part of the shaft buffer is between the two red lines.

Great job on question and picture! No need to change the expensive input shaft. Yamaha and many aftermarket companies sell a "spacer" for about 25.00. Make shure all of the old circlip peices are off and install the "toothed" spacer then reinstall the secondary components. Most "torque spring kits" include the spacer. Good luck and sometimes these things aren't so expensive to fix. Later Dave

What spring do you have in the secondary? How does it break and how many times?
