Piston rings
I am currently rebuilding my G-9 engine and when I went to install the new rings on the piston, the top ring gets stuck in the piston when I compress it to reinstall the piston back in the cylinder. It also stays compressed in the piston when I remove the piston back from the cylinder again. Are the two top rings suppose to be the same size or different? The ones I reinstalled were new Yamaha brand and not the cheap aftermarket junk that people are selling today. Could the factory have put the wrong rings in the package? Are the two top rings supposed to be identical? I'm stumped and don't know what I need to do now to get this engine running again. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Piston rings
1st and 2nd rings are different. Make sure they're in the right place.
Make sure the Mark's are facing up. Make sure they are clocked correctly on the piston and oil them. Check the repair manual for details and clocking locations, it will tell you everything you need to know |

Re: Piston rings
You can check the old to new rings with a pair of veneer calipers to see if they are the same thickness. You should also put the rings in the cylinder to check old and new end gaps on the rings. Typically the top ring will be different and may be chrome since being at the top it needs more end gap and be able to take the higher temps. Top and second rings can also be stepped and not straight cut which goes along with making sure the mark faces up and the right ring is installed in the 1st and 2nd landing of the piston correctly.
Here is an example of how to install rings - just an example since yours may/will differ and best bet would be to check with the manufacturer of your rings for installation specs. https://www.pro-x.com/wp-content/upl...structions.pdf |
