Need Some Opion's
I was just contacted about a mid 80s Yamaha gas cart with a 18hp Kohler motor in it. I have not seen the cart yet, but am wondering what everyones opinion's are on the 80's Yami's and the Kohler motors. The guy wants to sell it for $600 is that worth it?
Thanks! |

Thanks Flintrock! What are the major things I should look for? I know a smoking engine is one thing, and make sure there is oil in it. This would be my first gas cart and am kinda clueless!

Re: Need Some Opion's
It's gonna be a homemade engine swap... So look for proper clutch alignment (straight alignment between the two clutches), exhaust makeup, if everything seems to be neatly done. If you can look at how they mounted the engine. There is probably some kind of lift too, so ask about that, and see how that affects how level the engine sits in the frame. At that price the seller probably knows there is some work to be done, so ask him. Check out the frame for obvious signs of major rust, surface rust is to be expected. If it all looks good but just needs engine work, I'd do it. Those 18 hp Koehlers are stump pullers!

Re: Need Some Opion's
I would go in with the mindset that if it would take up to $1000-1500 to make it right that would be OK. You would still be way ahead. More than that I don't know, it's still an '80's cart. Of course I have no idea what your personal finances are, but I would think that is a fairly realistic number for mild update.
