Default Bravo engine in a G1

I have read on this forum about putting a Yamaha Bravo snowmobile engine in a G1. looking for some specifics on how it is done. I understand you can swap the ignition from the original engine to keep reverse, and the original clutch for the starter/generator. Do you keep the Bravo carb? Does it need rejetting? Use the original cart exhaust? What about mounting the engine? Drill new holes in the original cart mount? Does this engine swap yield a significant increase in power?

Im not sure of it either... I am just going to install a 13-16hp in my G1. I will just have to deal without reverse... I heard a G2 rear axle installed also will allow the cart to have reverse with this engine swap also...

yes the bravo has 25hp and the g1 engine has i'd guess at 7-9 or so. you can keep the bravo carb and exaust, as for mounting the enigine, i would think you need to make a plate to bolt to the stock mounts and then drill holes for the bravo so the clutches line up. hopfully someone who has done this swap will chime in.

I had posted this so long ago I forgot about it. I have started this conversion as a winter project. So far i have found the Bravo engine will accept the complete G1 ignition system including flywheel. This will allow the engine to run in the opposite direction and keep reverse gear. I am currently building a lift kit for the body and then I will need to fab up an engine mounting plate to adapt the engine to the cradle. This will require some thought and planning to include clearance for the clutch. I plan on using the Bravo carb and will rejet it if needed. The Bravo exhaust should fit with some modification.
When I get a little farther along I will start a thread and post some pix.

I was hoping to just use the Bravo engine and keep the carb and muffler off the G1 engine to keep the cart as original as possible !

Any one done this ?

Think you will need the carb (for shure) and most likely the muffler. Bigger engine needs more fuel and air and the muffler would be "tuned" for the engine size and output. Good luck/Welcome and lets see some build pic's

I doubt it would work very well. The G1 carb is much smaller than the Bravo carb, and the exhaust much more restrictive. The Bravo engine is ported for higher RPM and more power and will be a real dog if it can't breathe correctly. Why bother if you are not going to get anything better than the regular G1 engine you started with? I could be wrong, but that is my prediction.

The exhaust is key to the bravo power, and you don't want to change the length/diameter of the pipe either. Otherwise I'd say while you were in there advance the timing a hair I enlarged the holes a little. It will go faster in forward and slower in reverse, a little.

Have you completed this conversion sho305 ? What did you do for a starter pulley ? I doubt the Bravo will work ?

Think I am going to put a clone motor in my G9. No I worked over G1s before that is how I advanced the timing with their plate on the block. There are whole threads on the bravo here or at BU. The G1 engine is derived from an old sled motor, one before the bravo existed, the GP yamaha iirc. Pretty sure they made a 400cc version of it but likely hard to find.
