Default Hold my hand while adjusting the governor

I am new to this carting thing. I have a G9 that I just put in a new 18hp Vanguard. Motor has great torque. I would like to pick up more top end. I have read about "adjusting" or "by-passing" the governor. How do I adjust it for more top end? If I do adjust it, what are the drawbacks? I know that I should not have the cart "pinned" to prevent a blown motor, but can I gain some top speed? Please help with instructions on the adjustment.

Thanks,

MysteryMan

Is the throttle hooked to the ground speed gov.? If so, tighten the 10mm nut at the top of the trans. You'll play hell blowin' a stock vanny up. The valves will float at around 43-4500rpm.

Dirty,
Thanks for kind of "taking me under your wing". I believe it is hooked up to the ground speed governor. I followed the directions that came with the Vanguard and connected everything as directed. How much tightening of the nut equals how much gain in speed? Seat of the pants? I am seeing that a tach is a wise investment, do you agree?

For what its worth, things are so screwball out here in california, I'd like to "adjust the governor" with a pillow case filled with old spindles. My wife works for the state, they've given her, now, three unpaid "furlough"days off per month which equates to about a 15% decrease in pay and now they are talking about a fourth day and another pay cut. Meanwhile all the legislators are still getting full boat. Oh well, enough rant.

Ok, what about that help in adjusting the governor. What do I do? should I have a tach? HELP!!!

Wife was gone all day so I was out puttering in the mancave. I tightened the 10mm nut on the governer. I adjusted it 1 full revolution. It made a huge difference. Wasn't sure if that was too much so I backed off 1/3 turn. It is still good, but 1 turn was better. is that too much?
