Default G1 relay problem!

Hi, i am working on a G1 for a buddy that he bought. It has spark and acts like it wants to fire but i'm not sure the wiring is ok. Previous owner apparently replaced the 2 relays with 4 ford style relays. Is this possible? I have photos to show my dilemma. I'm new to the yamaha's but have worked on 2 smokes for years. I'm just not sure this wiring setup can fly. Any help would be appreciated. As you can see in the pics, the relays and the wiring are the only new things on this cart, i'm just guessing but i suspect someone tried some wiring magic on it, couldn't get it running right so they dumped it and my buddy bought it. It has 130psi compression,Reeds look fine, new spark plug, air filter is missing so i used a temp K&N cone filter for testing, cranks over fine, if you give it a little gas it will cough and sputter like it wants to fire. It has spark that is bright white and looks like a firestorm, not the normal blue flame spark you normally see. If these relays will work, does it need 4 of them? Why not just 2 like it had?

The guy probably tried it, because old j10 solonoids are hard to find and expensive. Those solenoids do need to be "continuius duty" rather than automotive (only used to crank the enfine over). Looks like the top lefthand solenoid doesnt have a good ground lead (from picture looks like wire theads going no were? I would also check the 4 wire leads coming out of the back of the engine (those a you source and pulsar leads for electronic ignition) the could effact spark and maybe timing in that repect. If its been stiing a long time, drain the gas and remove/disassamble and clean the carb. Good luck and keep us posted. Dave

The ground wire on the top left was fried in two somehow. The relays are not automotive style, just looks like it, I havn't removed one to see the numbers on it yet. I got home today and drained the tank, gas looked like turpentine, cleaned all the leads to the engine so i have good connections, removed the carb and checked the floats and cleaned it,crimped off the oil line to the carb, put in mixed gas with amsoil 32:1 for now as i don't know if oiler works right(leaking oil around it at the base) pulled the plug and it was a BR9ES, Isn't it suppose to be a BP-6HS? BR9 too cold? I had a BR8ES to try and it fired up and once warmed didn't run too bad! will it run rough if the exhaust valve isn't working? (no cables installed and ran throttle by hand with cart lifted up on jacks). when wiring has been changed around it's tough to figure out what is causing the problem, you can almost throw the schematic out the window.

Usually..Yes.

If your missing the linkages to make it work, i suggest you remove it if possible and plug the 2 holes. The valve will just float around and cause power issues.

Hey all, I am reviving this after so long because my buddy wouldn't get off his duff and get me the parts and stuff i asked for so i said get this thing out of my garage! Fast forward to now, It's back, lol only with cash. 1980 G1 with 4 continuous duty solenoids mounted on the fender well. I have done a complete overhaul on the engine, installed an allsports 4" lift and 20x10x8 tires. Anyways the engine rolls over and if i give it any gas it sounds like it is detonating. I am gonna try adusting the timing but it is set in the middle and is lined up with the timing mark on the case so i don't think that is it. It does turn over in forward and reverse. Ill try to take some photos tonight.
