Default 88 G2 Starter Problem

My 88 G2 is sluggish (for lack of a better word) starting. When I hit the pedal, it will sometimes turn over right away. Sometimes it will do nothing for a few seconds, then hit. Sometimes it makes a high pitched buzzing, like a mosquito.

I have done the following:
1. Jumper cable from battery to starter. Positive and Negative. No change.
2. Replaced brushes in starter. No change.(The old ones looked good, only about 1/4 inch shorter than new ones.)
3. Gone half blind staring at the computer looking for old posts about this.
4. Pulled half my hair out trying to figure it out.

I have not:
1. Kicked the cart.
2. Set the cart on fire.

Should I try the latter two?

Thanks for any help guys and gals.

mine does that, i think when the motor stops on the compression stroke it's hard for the starerator to overcome it, if it happens to stop on any other stroke it has enough time to get wound up to over come the compession stroke,

that or the starter belt is worn. but i have a new belt and bat. in mine and it still will do that

I agree about the compression. It just seems like it should be strong enough to overcome that.. I don't want it to decide that it's not going to start at some point and leave me stranded. My belt and battery are good also. At least I know someone else is in the same boat.

If you can use a volt meter, you can do tests to find the problem. If you'd I will walk you thru it. Tonight I'm done. Dave

What did the armature look like at the brush contact area when you installed the brushes? I have chucked the armature up in a hand drill and used a very fine file with light pressure to clean it up with very good results.

Sometimes it makes a high pitched buzzing, like a mosquito.

Like a belt slipping or a electrical resistance, have you put it on jack stands and observed the starter belt?

Smallblock, I can use a voltmeter, and that would be great if you could tell me what to do.

Crash, the armature looked ok to me, and by ok I mean it looked relatively clean, and no gouges. I don't know exactly what it should look like. It didn't appear to be worn or rough.

Doomsman, it is like electrical resistance. The belt is good, no slipping. I didn't use jackstands, but did put it in neutral and and hit the pedal and it wasn't slipping.

Thanks all.

Well, based on smallblock's sticky, I have a bad starter/generator. Can they be rebuilt, or do I need to find a new one?

I think your local S/G repair shop can go through them.
