Default any ideas? 1996 fuse problem

I had a 1996 Yamaha that we took in on trade, and I installed a set of driving lights on it. I ran positive from battery and negative from frame. Car with lights on would blow the car's fuse (not lights) after about 15 minutes. Car with lights off would run fine.

I fixed the problem by isolating the light system from the frame.

Anyone know what would cause the problem? It is fixed, but wondering what may be the culprit.

There were no obvious loose connections.

The only theory I have is some carbon dust built up in the starter/generator generating a fractional amount of feedback which is increased by the draw of the lights.

I know that the frames on Yamaha carts are not grounded. I am not very good with electrical systems, but I'm fairly certain you can't ground to something that's not grounded from the power source.

Do not ground ANYTHING to the frame on a Yamaha. It will blow the main fuse everytime. The frames on Yamaha's are not grounded. Ground to the neg side of the battery only.

hmmm, i was able to pick up voltage there without a problem :-) So the frame had some ground.

Thanks for the info though, makes sense...

We don't do much with Yamaha's....

you will get some ground especialy if the motor mount are tired & touching metal sometimes (ground at the battery)

but another problem is the 10amp fuse does not support light you need to switch for a 20 amp

I had the lights fused with a 20 amp on the positive battery post.

That might make sense though. Does the main fuse on the yamaha fuse negative? If so it would make a lot of sense.
