Default 1993 G9 Low Torque and Smoke

Hey, I'm new on the forum but will likely be a regular for awhile. Thanks in advance for taking the time to help out? I recently bought a 1993 G9, I'm trying to figure out exactly what to expect out of this thing. The govenor has already been completely disconnected and the top speed is pretty decent. On the other hand, it takes awhile to get up to speed, it won't even touch a steep hill and smokes like crazy when it is cold.

The main thing I want out of the cart is Torque. Will these carts drive up a dirt hill or drag a dead deer out of a field? Or do I need to look into a different motor?

I'm a mechanic so a rebuild isn't impossibel for me, I just don't want to rebuild a motor that isn't going to perform like I need.

I've seen the torque kits, and could invest in one in the future, but just want to make sure the engine is doing it's job first.

Thanks again for any help. I'll try to get some pics of the cart, but they are a bit emberassing the previous owner did a half baked lift job.

Welcome ckraker, The G2/9 model carts are some of the best for torque. You should have plenty of power and torque if the drive line is in good condition.
I use mine to put our jetskis in and out of the lake.
To start with, check the motor mounts to see if they are worn or loose. Hit the drive and driven clutches with a couple shots of grease.
The drive clutch zerk is on the outer rim of the movable half and the zerk for the driven is on the inward side toward the transaxle closer to the center shaft.
Check your drive belt for wear, the width should measure 1 3/16, anything under 1 1/8 should be replaced.
You can get a torque spring kit for the rear/driven clutch or you can pull the motor and redrill the mounting holes forward 1/2 inch.
That will wake up the low speed torque without taking away from the top speed.
As far as the smoking, start with the basic tune up stuff, Change oil, compression check, air filter just to get it breathing right.
Still might need a set of rings and both valve seals, it only comes with one but put one on stems.

Sweet, Thanks for the tips I'll check everything and let you know what I find. I adjusted the Carb like this: Idle screw turned in 1/4, air mixture screw 1 1/2 turned out. does that sound right. It looked pretty clean but I should probably still take it apart and give it a once over.

How hard is it to do the Valve seats?

crash hit the nail on the head!
i have a g9 with the torque driven spring and a k+n filter with the carb re jetted and a moded exhaust and it has plenty of torque. climbs hills easily and can pull a enclosed 10' trailer loaded with a 58'' zero turn mower.
good luck and post some pictures of it, to help us help you.

like crash said, the smoke could be bad rings, or the crackcase being over filled with oil, which will cause it to drain out into the airbox, onto the airfilter.

My cart didn't come with any air filter at all. Can I put pretty much any generac filter on it? Any suggestions for an affordable filter? I need everything right up to the carb.
Thanks

Ouch!! Your cart unless rejetted, will run alot better with the stock airbox and filter on it.
Just enough restriction to keep it from running lean.
Unfortunetly, This might be the reason for the smoking issue as well!

Wow, It is hard for me to believe that an air filter makes any difference. My car runs fine without one. I have a feeling that a stock air box is pretty pricey. Any input on a good aftermarket jet/air filter?

Pictures should be posted tonight. The cart is at my parents house I haven't been back there since the first post.
