G1 clutch reused on engine upgrade
Has anyone reused the G1 clutch on a upgraded engine? I want to put a 5-12 hp horizontal shaft engine (briggs or any other brand) in my G1. I know the G1 drive clutch is a tapered shaft. Has anyone reused the clutch on a horizontal tapered shaft engine? thanks

Re: G1 clutch reused on engine upgrade
Welcome to BGW!
12 hp would be OK but I wouldn't go much less. I'm not sure about the clutch. |

Re: G1 clutch reused on engine upgrade
Most 4-cycle engines use a straight crankshaft. Generator engines use a tapered shaft, but it is a different taper than the one on the G1 2-cycle engine. You would need to do some machine work to match them up.
The only engine I can think of the clutch might fit directly would be a Kawasaki engine from a John Deere Gator. A fairly rare and expensive item. Sounds like a lot of effort and money to reuse a 20+ year old clutch. Don't forget you will also lose reverse gear, since the replacement engine will not turn backwards. |
