Exclamation G1 fires it just doesn't stay on

I got a 1980 Yamaha G1 and it wont run by itself. Its getting gas, spark, we took out the carburator took it apart and cleaned it and still nothing, it has plenty of battery voltage, still wont run by itself. We did find one problem with the compresion it was only getting 30 psi but we took it to this guy that customizes carts and he relaced the piston which was chipped around the edges and did an awsome job so now were getting good compression but its still not running on its own. It fires up real nice.
Any suggestions?

I am not certain what you mean by it won't run on its own. I am assuming you know that the engine only turns over and runs when you depress the accelerator pedal. I have heard of others who thought that the engine should run continuously which is not the case. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Also don't confuse the generator spinning the motor over for it firing/idling.

Does the cart move at all when it fires up?

I would jack the rear wheels off the floor start the engine hold the gas pedal down.I'f it continues to run and only dies when you let off the gas pedal that is normal.{kill switch on trottle] Good luck

Is also possible to have a plugged muffler. Often you can hear the air pressure leaking at the pipe to cylinder fitting as the starter spins the motor. If it is loosen the muffler to pull the pipe back some and try starting it. Last one I found there was no air coming out of the exhaust turning engine over, until I stuck a big wire up it.
