Re: 1981 G1 RPMs
No but it must be a lot. I was once told the generator would blow up from rpm, then I ran some modded ones for years with no governors and down the roads wot at times....and never had a problem. Was also told it is based on an old sled motor that ran much higher rpm than the cart does. Those carts had stock tires and I recall once running a couple about minimum six miles on roads wot with no governors racing each other all the way.

Re: 1981 G1 RPMs
Same here my 81 I took the governor off and have been running it wide open and its hitting close to 28mpg with reg tires on it with a gps in hand. I run the guts out of it most the time and it never bothers it.

Re: 1981 G1 RPMs
Yea those 2 strokes you can rev pretty high.. On a snow machine i know they hit around 6-7K. Even some of the high performance machines hit around 8-9K+. I dont know if the g1 internals such as connecting rod and crank are different then the equivient snowmobile engine. just dont go too crazy with it. With the smaller carbs and airfilter on it, you will probably reach its max volumetic efficency before the motor over revs with a load on it.

Re: 1981 G1 RPMs
Right the carb kills the topend but it will still get up there eventually. IIRC they would have run 7K rpm in a sled. Most were 7-8 at that time in late 70s. Some ran 10K in 80s but may have been built differently, that was the polaris triple a friend used to race them. 10,500K with minimal internal mods would win the drag race every time if you could keep the clutches just right. However the G1 will make the most power maybe around 4K where the pipe and carb and porting let it do its best. It revs higher but has less power up there, mostly only good for cooking down the road it slows soon as you hit a hill. The mods I did helped it some, but without a carb and pipe change you can't do that much. I am positive I was over 30mph on stock 18 tires. However it was way too much fun, and at slower speeds it really took off with the lower gearing compared to a lifted cart.
