Default Easy Increase of POWER and SPEED

this is a picture of a Yamaha G14

I get ask this more than any other question in the shop
how do i increase my speed and power
well this is a low cost easy to do upgrade
since most used carts are from Golf Coarses
and have been de-turned..

first hook up a tach to your plug wire and
test to see what you have for RPM's
and write it down (if you have a potable GPS
set that up for the test ride as well and get max Speed)

so here is how you retune that for our use..

if you remove your air filter from the carb
see if you are getting full throtle
if not adjust the nuts and tighten the cable until you do
DO NOT GO PAST FULL THROTLE, keep checking as you adjust the nuts...

take a test ride and see what you have for numbers again..

should be a little better...

now you can adjust the nut and increase the RPM's from the govenor spring
go only one turn at a time and test again, keep doing this until
you get to where you want to be..

remember the lower you leave the RPM levels, the long you can run full throtle without worry about bringing the engine home in a basket...
these are stock engines so don't go to far, more than you need for your use.

will this make it a off road ATV that that pulls wheelies...NO... but for use in a camp ground or around the yard type use, this will be more than perfect..

Or, bypass the governor and hook the pedal cable directly to the carb., adjust, and hang on.

hang on is right, but don't forget to tell them to duck.

it not if, it is when will the Motor blow, everyone i know that has done that, will sooner than later be replacing the power plant...

but you are right about one thing, hang on, the cart will easily go over 40mph and hit about 6,000 RPM's until the valve float.... then KABOOM!!!!!!

I have never had any problems with having no governor. Listen to the engine and apply commonsense.

How did you get 6K rpm and 40mph, I never heard of one that fast. I've run mine since '99 with no governor and no rev limit, all I do is not floor it down a hill when at top speed. I will keep it floored on the level sometimes but not too far, since it goes about the same speed half throttle anyway. I can hit 30 gps on the level repeatedly never checked on a hill, with 22" tires on a G9. I doubt mine will go over 4K rpm, but never checked I lost my extension wire for my camp on tach.

I just got my G8 together a few weeks ago, no gov. tires are 21 1/2" tall. It will only do 25mph, but I have my throttle opening only about 7/8 of the way, not full throttle.Wish I had a tach for a couple hours, but not perminate on the car.

If you want a tack that works... here is a pic of a digatron, I have use these for about 30 years on our Racing Go Carts...

as for any gauge you have or use, they are for reference, so when you make a change you know if it is better or worse.. nothing more or less..

as for rpm's with no governor, if you can't get engine to rev up until the valves float, there is something not right....
trying putting your cart on blocks and running and see what you get, if still no luck you need to start looking at things..
engine brand and age (how tired your is) will determine how many rpms you can achieve without modification.

just an FYI... small engines where built back in the day (Wisconsin-kolher and other) were governed to run about 2,600 to 2,800 rpms
most of the small engine out of the box today thanks to the Japanese coming into America (Briggs-Kolher-Kawasaki) are now set to run 3,200 to 3,600 rpms depending on the spec
the engine was design for and run all day.

and to put this to rest, I will take the GPS out of my truck and take the golf cart down the road and see what I get for speed
and will take a picture and post all the specs on the cart and info from test...

It depends on the person as to wether or not they should bypass the governor. You have to be able to determine rpm and be knowledgeable of when to let off. Running 6 grand and over 40 in a stock cart is rare but I've done it in a 99 G16 "once!!": down hill on pavement. I bypass all my governors but I also know when to back off and keep my oil changed more than often. It's usually not a problem if you run off road all the time where speed will not be a factor. I mainly bypass mine because I can't stand the kickback and like to open it all way up when trying to climb a hill. If you can determine rpm's and know when to back off the pedal, go for it, but if you have no clue about engine rpm's, mechanic's, etc..., leave it alone and just adjust it.
