Default g1 oil pump

i have heard that the oil pumps on the g1 golf carts have plastic gears in them and are a weak point? also i would like to do away with the oil injection if this is true. what all does that intail. odviosly removing the oil tank and oil pump. then plug the hose that goes to the carb? and what would i mix my gas at after this change. thanks for any help

I am sure someone on here will help you on the mixture amount. The G1's we just traded to Todd were 29 and 26 years old and both of their oil injectors still work.

Oil pump failures are pretty rare. That being said, I did have one fail on one of my buggies, but it had been leaking externally for some time. I removed the pump and plumbing, and plugged the fitting on the carb with a rubber cap from the auto parts store. Plug the fitting on the muffler by flattening the metal tube or brazing it shut. You must leave the inner plate on the engine that the pump mounts to, as it also retains the crankshaft seal.
According to the Yamaha manual, the oil mix varies from 300:1 at idle to 150:1 at full throttle with the injection. I tried using chainsaw mix at 50:1, but it smokes and smells. I have read on the "other" forum that people are recommending 85:1. So far, I have had no problems with using that ratio.

I have several G1's and have never had a problem. When running them for long periods of time, I just make sure I can smell the oil or see a faint trail of smoke at high rpm. Usually when you hear about oil pumps going out, they are on snowmobiles. But they run at way higher rpms for longer periods of time. I would personally leave it on. Good luck either way.

The gear that drives the pump is indeed plastic. There is cheap, crappy plastic and there are high-quality polymers. This gear is made of a pretty high quality material. I have examined a number of these gears and given that they are all 25+ years old and have not seen the light of day since leaving the factory, have been in very good shape. If you are concerned about the condition of yours, pull the clutch, remove the cover and inspect it. Cleaning out the gearcase and putting in a little fresh grease after all this time is a good idea and will give you peace of mind about your oil pump.

If oil pump failures were really a problem, these buggies should have blown up long ago. Look at all of us who still have these antiques up and running!

back yard mechanics
how old are they, we spin race motors 9500 rpm and higher, and for insurance mix 150 to one, no need to remove pump. Goofy anal about it, don't fill the gas to the top and watch the oil tank for consumtion when adding gas. They use those plastic gears to drive cam shafts.
