Default Do rebuilt engines make more noise?

I am looking to purchase a 96 yahama gas. The seller is stating the engine has recently been rebuilt with NO mods. The engine is considerably louder than others I have tested. He states that when you rebuild an engine on one of these it gets louder. Is that true. I am a car guy and have no idea on these.

thanks

Shouldn't be any louder to my knowledge. Where does the noise seem to be coming from? Is it muffler noise?

It sounds more a tick coming directly from the engine.

Maybe he didn't rebuild it correctly. I'd be a little cautious. Have you drove the cart? It might be valve noise or something but I would really check it out by driving it and seeing if it smokes or anything. Put it in neutral (gear selector between F and R) and jack up the rearend if possible for safety purposes and rev it up to see if it gets worse. Also, check the gear selector out. If any of it was removed, he might not have installed it back correctly and it could be somewhat between gears. This will make an aweful noise but usually causes the cart to slip a little or sounds more like a gear grinding. See if you can tell where the noise is coming from exactly.

I have never heard of a rebuild engine being louder.

That was kind of my thoughts on it but not real familar with these. It does not smoke at all and seems to have plenty of power but I dont have a lot to compare it to since I have not driven many. I will check out the gear selector. How can you tell if it is slipping??? Since it has a clutch in it. Will it slip in and out of gear?

Kind of. It make a loud noise where the gear is trying to mesh or is slipping: light metal to metal noise. It may not be this but something to check anyway. It may also be valve noise if light tapping noise or just clicking. Drive it up a big hill and run it wide open if you can. Put it through the mill if your thinking of purchasing it. How much is he asking if you mind? That could be a determining factor as well.

Could be a valve adjustment. (.004 TDC cold)
