Default Accessory Madness

I know a G-14 is really not designed to have many eletrical add-ons, but its a sickness of mine to keep adding more accessories. Grant it I dont run all these goodies at the same time, but i'm worried about overload. Should I add a back-up battery and how should it be hooked up, or is there a better solution ? Here's a list of my madness. Thanks.

Headlights w/ Brakelights
Top mounted roof fog lights
Inside roof neon lights
Roof console radio
Dashboard Instrument panel w/ 12volt clock, temp
and amp. gauges
12 volt cigarette lighter
Hour meter
Small dashboard neon lights
Underbody Neon lights
And soon to be Front Power Winch

I would just check the starter/generator and make sure its output is acceptable. I think with all those things, you should upgrade to a deep-cycle marine battery. As long as your engine is turning decent RPMs, your starter is generating adequate current. Underbody lights don't draw a whole lot, gauges don't, and radios dont, so really the only thing that's drawing much is the actual driving lights. I think you will be fine.

Check all of your electrical connections before adding that stuff and repair any that need it. Heavy loads tend to make problems extremely obvious quite quickly.

i have a G14 and i thought about getting a sand rail tank relocating it to the rear and putting another battery where the old gas tank was.

Sounds like that deep cycle battery is a good idea, but when i go to add the power winch , should I run it straight to the battery and put a in-line fuse on the positve side ?

I would recommend a fuse just for safety.

Remember, Yamaha frames are not grounded, so you will need to ground everything off the battery.

Excellant point !!! Early "Yami's" (Up untill g16 witch use magneto ignition) use a "TCI" ignition that runs off "Ground", any "add on's" should be run to the battery (positive and negative) and fused (about 20 amp). In my opinion ..I wouldn't use a "deep cycle battery" ...They cost more and I don't beleive the 14.5 to 15.5 volt charging circut charges them correctly. (I could be wrong) If you think your "charging circut" is not keeping up... you could take out the "AVR" (automatic voltage regulator) and install an "adjustable " j10-81950-00-00 regulator (don't buy aftermarket...there not adjustable) and adjust it for what voltage "output" you'd like. Just don't "cook" the battery ! Dave

Most winches don't come with or use fuses. They use breakers or overload relays that should come with the winch. They are little, about 1"x1" mounted inline to the battery and the winch pos cable mounts to it.
If you overload the winch the relay will heat up and open the internal contacts shutting off power to the winch until it cools and closes.
Run both pos and neg straight to the battery. It should come with good instructions.
