Default g9 runs in neutral, but not in gear???

I just bought a mid 90's Yamaha G9..it sat for a couple of years...looked like about 15 years..lol and now I have it and working on it.. I tore apart carb and fuel lines and cleaned everything out..changed the gas, cleaned fuel pump, replaced spark plug(the plug in it was the wrong one). I got it running and fined tuned and adjusted carb and throttle.. Now it runs beautiful, but only in neutral... The second I try to drive it.. it hops and jumps forward but wont start.. if i put my foot out and push it, I can get it going or if i am on a little of a decline!!!.. I really dont know much about these carts, but it almost looks like it works like my snowmobiles.. It almost feels like it is trying to drive before it fires up, like it has something to do with the clutch being too tight or sticking.. I dont know, i just want to get this beaut running. I just ordered way too much stuff for it, or at least thats what my wifes says!!! lol.. I am about to pimp it out..I cant wait to let everybody see it!!! But its not cool if it doesnt move!!! LOL Please help..thanks G

Primary clutch is probably stuck. Is drive belt tight?

Welcome to BGW rockhoyle!!
G2 and G9 carts will move some when the pedal is pushed, no biggie but should just fire up and go.
Make sure you have a fully charged battery and the starter belt is tight.
How do the brushes look?
I'm thinking you might have a weak battery or weak starter, cable connections good and clean on both battery end and starter end?
when you run it in neutral, can you see the drive and driven clutches cycling open and closed?
Have you done a compression test on the engine? Adjusted the valves?
Does it make a difference or help if you pull the choke out a little when taking off?

Thank you crash. I just a brand new battery and replaced neg. terminal.. I should have just bought another one for positive because its rigged on with a hose clamp!!! lol I really dont know much about engines.. I kinda learn as i go.. Sometimes when i start in neutral, the belt goes to spin and just stops everything just stops and i have to let off gas and try again until it starts to run. havent checked ends to starter but will tomorrow.. When i run it I do notice clutch moving in or out.. But besides that dont know anything about valves or compression..Sorry!!!!

When I was first getting it running.. i had to hold choke out to get and keep it running!! but now i dont even need to use it!!! i got it adjusted pretty good i think..with a lil help from my buddy!!!.. I mean it starts right when i hit the gas unless its in gear or it does that little thing when i have to let off gas and redo it!!!

Is it possible that it is jumping out of gear? Does it do the same thing in forward and reverse?

That's what I was looking for!
When you say everything stops, does the starter stop as well or just spin on the belt?
If it spins on the belt just tighten the belt unless the belt is worn and in the bottom of the pulleys. Might want to replace it anyway and start fresh.

If the starter stops as well I would (because it's cheaper)go ahead and repair/replace the battery cables or ends to get as much juice to the starter as possible. If it still does it I would suggest some starter brushes are in order or an overall rebuild.

Had a G-9 do the same thing to me today. The cart would start/run fine in nuetral and as soon as you would put it into forward it would lurch forward and not start. The problem was the drive clutch was all messed up. Changed the clutch and it worked just fine.
