Default Yamaha G2 intermittent forward gear

I have a yamaha G2 and having trouble getting it in forward gear, reverse is fine. I can occasionally get it to engage forward. Which cable, and which direction do I adjust on the cable to better engage forward?

Welcome to BGW!

Open the seat and move the shifter F-R. In the F position you want to adjust the cable so it pulls more to actuate the lever on the transaxle.

Thanks, I've tried to adjust in both directions with no luck, it goes into reverse with no problem and when I switch to forward it sounds like it wants to engage and sounds like it partially does (clicking when switched to forward) and sometimes will engage forward. The problem started fairly recently, right before i put it away for the winter (Minnesota). Is there a way to reach the transaxle to manually switch from forward to revese without having to disassemble the muffler or pull the rear end?

Sounds like you may have a bad cable or two. If you can get your hand between the engine and trans, maybe you can move the lever.

I have to agree with Ron. One or both of the f/r shift cables isn't doing its job. I do recommend changeing bothe at the same time...you don't want to do that job twice!

yup a cable is bad or badly adjusted. when you shift you should be able to see the lever on the trans move. it must not be moving far enough into forward as it is rev to cause this.(just a visual check)

Just adjust the cables. No need to tinker with the connection to the tranny.
