G2 Sheave noise
Hello everyone. This is my first post, because most of the information that I have needed I have found in the forums but this one needs a more "experienced" touch.
I purchased a 1985 G2 from a friend at work for relatively cheap, because it needed some work and he didn't want to work on it. Initially, I found that the brand new belt he had installed was put in upside down (Ribs outward), and at least one of the motor mounts was ripped. Also, I noticed that the rebreather hose was missing, which caused it to run quite rough. Well, needless to say, I ended up changing all 4 motor mounts because 3 of them were ripped, and then adjusted the tensioner to get the slack out. I then put a new hose from the carb to the air cleaner, and then ensured that the air cleaner cap was on securely. I also put the belt on the correct way, but noticed the ribs on one side were worn down at a 45 degree angle. When I took off, it ran like a champ, but then it started to have a clanging noise similar to when I first brought it home. Perplexed, I put it in neutral, with the seat up, and revved it up and could hear the noise. I took the belt off, and found that the noise went away this time when I revved it up. I looked at the sheave on the shaft to the transmission, and noticed it had some play in it. All three of the ramp shoes are present, and both secondary sheaves look to be in good condition. My question is, could it be the wearing on the belt causing the issue or is maybe the torsion spring weak causing this issue? This is my first golf cart, so I am new to this kind of setup. (I am used to working on bigger engines) I wanted to seek some advice here first before spending any kind of money. Thanks again for any input! Brian |

Re: G2 Sheave noise
The secondary clucth could have a bad bushing in it causing some play and the noise.
That model didn't have a grease fitting on it and most mechanics dont know how to prevent its failure. Its a simple fix if that is the problem. |

Re: G2 Sheave noise
That is kinda what I was thinking as well.
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond back to this post. Things got kinda busy for me this week and haven't spent much time at the computer. I will still get pics to post, just may take a few days because the beast is buried behind some stuff on the patio while we clean out the storeroom. Is it OK to grease the sheave and shaft without any issues? |

Re: G2 Sheave noise
In my dealings with secondary's, if the sliding sheave bushing is worn, you would get a growling noise and feel a vibration in the seat of your pants. Best to change to a new floating flange (with a zerk fitting) maybe even a newer style spring seat (much beefier) and install a "spacer" in place of the circlip installed from the factory. Then you would have a "stout" greasable clutch assy without taking it apart. Clanging/metalic noise sounds more like a primary clutch weight. Good luck, let us know what you decide to do, It will help others.

Re: G2 Sheave noise
No you don't "Have to" buy the torque spring kit unless that's what you want out of your cart. I was just saying, you only want to do this job once, buy what you intend the cart use for and you will be very happy and its greasable without taking it apart. Hope that makes alittle sence. Before you buy the parts, do a search or ask for more members thoughts.

Re: G2 Sheave noise
I understand. I am the kind of guy who figures, as long as I am in there I might as well change the rest. One and done I always say...
For this cart, it is just going to be a recreational cart for me and my kids. Something to cruise around the neighborhood with, or take up to the lake during the summer. I don't plan on jacking it up at this time, but may raise it in the future. The original owner took good care of this cart, however the second owner let it go. I just want to make sure it run right and doesn't rattle or make any other noises before I put the kids on it. |
