Is this a G1 clutch?
I just got my Jakes 6" lift installed on my '86 G1 and I'm having trouble with clutch clearance on the frame. I know that most of the G1's need to have the frame dented for clutch clearence, but my clutch sticks out over the frame beyond just denting it in. As I started looking at a fix, I took the clutch cover off and noticed a couple of the weighted arms were broke and worn. As I searched the www for a relplacements, I started thinking my problem may be that someone replaced the clutch with a G2. Can anyone tell from the pics what clutch this is? It has j3800 marked on it. Any help would be great.

Re: Is this a G1 clutch?
if you have a pre 81 g1 the frame is much closer. some guys have had to cut a inch out of the frame to get the lift to fit.
that looks like a 4 cycle clutch not a 2 stroke clutch |

That's a G2 -G9 clutch. The later G3 Sun Classic also uses the same config.

Re: Is this a G1 clutch?
yup thats a g2-g9 4 stroke clutch. the clearence problem maybe because the 4 stroke clutch is bigger i think. and you can buy most parts for those clutches.

Re: Is this a G1 clutch?
Thanks guys. I thought it looked like the g2 clutches that I was seeing on the web. I can run this clutch with the cover off to get by once I replace the 2 bad arms, I just needed to make sure this was a g2. What kind of clutch would you guys recommend replacing with? I here a lot about the comet? Is the shaft the same?

Re: Is this a G1 clutch?
Just buy the weight link. Maybe just one if the two others are still okay. About US$ 30 each including new pins (1 short and 1 long) plus the nylon/teflon thin washers. Remove the broken link by removing the allen/hex screw with an allen wrench (1.5 mm).
It's not easy to remove those pesky little screws. But heat will loosen them a bit. |

Re: Is this a G1 clutch?
1985 and up Yamaha G1's and G3 (sun classic's) used the 3 weight style clutch you have pictured. If you pulled the fixed sheave ,you'd find it has gear teeth to drive the oil pump gear. They called for there own part # for the weight kits, but I'm shure you could use a G2/G9 if nesessary.

Nivel lists that as part no. 10527 listed at US$38.00 plus without the pins which you also have to replace unless they are still in perfect condition, i.e. no worn out portion.

Re: Is this a G1 clutch?
Thanks for the great info guys. I have already had the fixed sheave off to replace crank seals and you are right it does have a gear to run the oil pump. I had not thought of that, so my clutch must be for a 2 stroke. I'll probably just replace the two bad weights and pins and run with the cover
off for while. It looks as if one has already been replaced. Amen to the set screws for the pins being a bear. You just about can't get an Allen key in there, and when you do, careful not to use idiot strength or you'll twist that little dude to Kingdom come. |

Re: Is this a G1 clutch?
i would almost buy the Comet 93c clutch from CPP as it is shallower than the two stroke style clutch
