Air flow problems, Please Help!!!!
I have a Yamaha G-16 and I have upgraded the clutch (driven) with the hot set up through plowmans and I have upgraded my air filter to the K&N and also jetted the carb. I have the aftermarket exhaust. What I am wondering is. I am backfiring still when I let off the gas.Plus I am not getting really good response when I hit the gas. I have adjusted the carb mix screw both ways several times and with no real help.I am not sure if I can move the needle on the carb up or if its possible to take the air filter housing completely off and go with a foam pod air filter. I just want no hesitation and crisper response. I also haven't taken off the governor yet. I have it turned way in so my rpm's go higher but I am afraid of blowing it up.

Re: Air flow problems, Please Help!!!!
Try pulling the choke out in increments to see if it is starving for fuel, If that doesn't help or makes it worse you will need to get more air flow or jet it down one size.
Try running it without the air filter (not in dusty conditions) just to see if it is making it run rich. |

If it backfiring when you let of the throttle, make sure your butterfly valve is fully closing when you back off the throttle. Make sure is fully open at full throttle also, you may need to move your gas petal one or two splines in order to achieve both fully closed and fully open. Also you may need to check you valve backlash.

Re: Air flow problems, Please Help!!!!
OK I tried the choke trick and it didn't help at all. It made it worse. Maybe drilling a couple more holes in the air filter housing will work. I wont try until I get more posts. I dont want to screw things up at all. I still think that by eliminating the air filter all together and going with an add on pod filter like we used to with our sportsman's would work.

Re: Air flow problems, Please Help!!!!
That's why I asked about the choke, it made it worse so it tells me you are getting too much fuel to start with which means you need to drop a jet size or try a less restrictive air filter.
Did you try running without the air filter? That could give you another hint. |
