Default 2000 Yamaha g16 surges

Hello everyone,
I purchase a 2000 G16 yesterday for my 98 year old grandmother. She finally decided to give up driving her pickup truck. Not kidding! Anyhow she has a large piece of property and the cart will come in handy for her to get back and forth to the mailbox and around the yard. Now the problem, I purchased the unit yesterday and I drove it around the dealers lot before loading it into my truck It seemed to run fine but I did have to hold the choke open. I attributed the surging to it being cold. When I got it home and tried to take Grandma for a ride in her new cart, it died. Stepping on the pedal the cart just turned over but would create enough power to drive. I pulled the plug and put it in my glass beader and cleaned it up and that seemed to help. The only issue is that the cart surges now. It seems to be dead idle or wide open throtlle. I'm going to get a new plug for it today and try that. The fuel filter is clean and it appears to be getting plenty of fuel. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The look on grandma's face was priceless when I told her the cart was hers. Big disappointment when I couldn't even take her for a ride. Thank you in advance!

sounds like you need to pop the carb off and give it a good cleaning, prob crap in the bowl, small air compressor should clear any of the jets in the bottom, may be old fuel also, but i think i'd start with pulling the carb and cleaning it.

I'd take it back to the dealer and ask them to fix it or give you a diferant cart that runs correctly. G16's shouldn't need much choke and they shouldn't surge. Good luck on grandmas new ride

I agree, take it back to the dealer and let them make it good. And then we will need a pic of grandma driving that cart!

1.) Take to dealer
If not possible as gutterboy says, the Carb is probably the issue....

The major issues in the past few years is the Ethanol in the gas we buy. If a carb'ed engine has this gas in the carb bowl all winter it seems to root and grow a green slim in the carb.

If you open up the carb and it looks this way the only solution is to clean it really really well. This is sometimes hard because as you clean this with brake or carb cleaner the green stuff will breakup and move into smaller jet holes etc.

SO, If the green stuff is there or not here is what I would do. Drain the fuel out of the carb bowl by opening the drain near the bottom of the carb. Disassemble the carb somewhere that you can spread out all the parts as they come out. Soak all metal parts overnight in a jar of carb cleaner. Use brake cleaner on all parts that have gaskets/rubber parts. The brake cleaner is less corrosive and will not hurt these fragile parts. Once this is complete use compressed air to blow out every part. Reassemble and you should be good.... When reinstalling the carb on the engine be careful to check the gaskets and most important check the plastic spacer for cracks. This spacer is just behind the carb and is easily broken if you over tighten the bolts when reinstalling the carb.

This sounds difficult to do all this but it really isnt that bad.

Hope this helps!!

I'd definitely take it back to the dealer since you just got it and let them correct the problem. But it sounds like you got an air/fuel mixture problem.

Hi,
I really appreciate all of the input. Unfortunately the dealer is 200 miles from me. Looks like I'll be disassembling the carb. I'll definitely post a picture of Grandma driving her cart. I'm hoping they have carb rebuild kits for these units. Its a 2000 so I'm hoping I can get a rebuild kit. Just to vent a little, I told the dealer this was for a 98 year old woman who decided to give up driving her pick-up truck. You would hope that they would have made sure the cart ran well considering it was advertised as "good running condition." Like I said, thanks for all of the input and I will update everyone on how I made out with Grandma's cart.

I don't think I would go that far, Sh!t happens and even dealers are human, just look at Sco.........nevermind. couldn't help it!

If it's not feasible to return it I would check the carb for adjustments or cleaning.
Choking on start up means the low speed circuit is lean which could be as simple and turning the low speed air fuel mixture screw out until it clears up, try that first.
Screw the mixture screw in until it seats then back out 1 1/2 turns and try it, keep coming out by 1/4 turns until it clears up, If you get to 3 turns out pull the carb and clean it.
