Default Power Mods for a G1 ?

Is there any cheap mods for the G1 to get a little more power to get up hill's? Can the head be milled on these motors or is that a bad idea...

I would first start with a good tune up. New drive belt, filters, spark plug and then a governor adjustment.

If you want them to roll, you need a new top end if its worn. Mill the head, advance the timing, even a tiny bit of porting can help. Clutching also helps make it rev higher and take off hard then shift out fast so it drops rpm.

It has a new plug and air cleaner, fuel filter is clean. The belt is in good shape and measures about halfway in the range of tolerance given in the manual i found online. The cart runs good i just want a little more power going up the hill's. How can i adjust the clutch? Thanks all.

It depends the early clutch is better but they stopped making them. They are cast alum, the later ones have a big stamped metal gold-ish looking cover. You can shim the spring in the early one the later has none. Either way cleaning and lubing the clutches and a new belt is the best you can do otherwise. Belts that wear to the 1" are ok on a stock cart but terrible on lifted carts. Also check the motor mounts if the motor moves towards the trans under power it will hurt takeoff and hill climbing, you can tell the motor slows down. If the muffler is plugged it will have less power.

Clutch is aluminum colored and has Y-1 and 1000 stamped on the front. I have 100 psi cranking cold in foreward and 103 in reverse. Belt measures 1.160

You have the early (better) clutch. Compression is good. You would need to rebuild the engine to improve it. If you do, you could make some of the mods suggested by sho305. Try a performance drive belt from Plowman's. It makes a noticeable difference. Here's a way to improve your performance:

But it's not very cheap.

I forget its been a long time, but you take the clutch apart and put say an 1/8" washer behind the spring and try it. May need more or less, it will take off harder. Lube anything that moves in there. Note too if the clutches get worn bad where the inner face is not straight top to bottom but curved where the belt runs a lot, they don't shift well. Alum wears the steel parts tend not to, its from sand. Guy I know I had to rebuild his he actually wore holes in it on a G9.

Hard to say other than the muffler maybe what would give less power. I ran one a couple years ago was going to buy it, exhaust was plugged had to shove a rod up it. Got it going ran it hard it seemed ok. I drove it around and the steering was bad needed help, it didn't have the power it should have I assumed it needed boring, so I gave a lower offer and the guy said no way. I was not going to dump a grand into a cart that old, plus he had cut the seat bars off and seats were shot, etc. It was solid but needed lots of stuff that adds up. On stock tires a G1 should lay rubber in dirt/gravel/grass no problem, my beefed up one would powerslide on gravel it was like drifting school. I used to climb hills and it never stopped spinning, was a wooded area, any stock one would do that. I had 60 I took care of at the time, but obviously they are much older now and have issues they did not then.
