G1 Engine Rebuild Help Needed - Crankshaft Bearings

I am in the process of rebuilding my G1 but am having a little trouble getting the crankshaft bearing to release from the case. What are my options besides buying a special puller?

I am replacing crank and bearings so no need to remove bearings from the crankshaft, just trying to get the clutch side bearing out. There is a internal snap ring on the outside of the bearing and the crank is still in place.

Can I heat the bearing and hammer on the crank or is there an easier way.

Also, what is the recommended procedure to reinstall. Heat case and cool bearings, and then heat bearings and cool crank?

really recommend taking it to a shop and pay them to press the cases apart and back together

Well it looks like good ol' boy engineering paid off. I took a piece of angle iron with 3 holes drilled in it. Took my trusting $11 puller set from harbor freight and pushed the crank out of the bearing and then heated the case and lightly tapped the bearing out of the case. I can post some pictures if anyone is interested in the procedure.

Now if my new crank would just hurry up and get here.

I want to apologize up front for not buying the book and asking so many questions. Your help is greatly appreciated. Besides if it was not for us noobs asking good questions that have not been asked or answered in the past then this forum would not be needed anymore. Once I get the engine back together I will post pictures of the entire process. Plan on putting a custom paint job on it as well.

What is the recommended sealant for the case joint? I would prefer something I can get at my auto store. Permatex Grey is what someone stated in the past.

Also, what is the procedure for reinstalling the crank? Should I install bearings into cases and then install crank or put bearings on the crank and install cases?

Very good questions. We used to have a special tool arangement (no longer available and mine was lost in the franchise move) that used a large bolt and special collars to seperate and pull the case halves togeather. Install the bearings into the case halves (are you getting new bearings and crank seals?) You could use a plate and section of pipe and the primary clutch bolt to pull the crank into the bearing and case halve and do the simular set up on the flywheel side (just don't damage the crank threads). Yamabond is what they called for, but I think the Permatex Grey should do the job.

Well I heated the cases and froze the bearings. Tapped them in with a socket and hammer. The fan side sits slightly proud of the case but looking from the backside it's drove home. When my crank arrives I will freeze it and heat cases/bearings and hopefully tap it home with a soft face dead blow or rubber mallet.

In the process of painting the cases and shroud tonight.
