Default G1 with no power

Hi all, I have recently purchased a used G1, and have had nothing but problems, after it went to a steady decline in performance i have changed many parts, Piston, rings, rebuilt the carb, changed the gas, and fuel filter, and brand new battery. After i place it on jack stands it revs up and seems to be operating the best, but put it on the ground and it will slowly take off and eventually slow down to barely moving. Feels like it loses all power. Any suggestions, ideas, anything else i can change? Will the muffler bbq be the answer?

Well, try a compression test to start. After that more can be determined. When you replaced the piston and rings, did you bore the cylinder or just replace piston and rings? Also need to check for leaks on crankshaft seals.

I hear different numbers. I just installed cylinder and piston kit in mine and I only have 90#. I think I need to run mine for a little while longer before it breaks the rings in properly. I have about 20 minutes of drive time so far.

I think over 130# is what some say. I find it hard to get that much with these little engines.

What year is yours?

Ok good to know its the same year as mine. First thing I would do is get a compression reading. Then, see if you have the exhaust butterfly still in yours. Its where the pipe connects to the engine. Should be a rod that connects to the throttle across the fan shroud. If you still have this, I would remove it. I found out mine was so corroded with carbon that it really restricted mine. It will definitely open up more.

You got any pictures? That would help out the most.

Mine did the exact same thing. Try removing your pipe and running it and see if you get your power back. They get clogged over time and completely shut down the flow. There are ways to BBQ the pipe to clear it out or you can just find a used one like I did for $75.00.

Just happened to see this in a search. I was actually thinking of doing this to test if the muffler is clogged up. So if I disconnect the muffler and it is causing the loss of power it will come back with the muffler off? If it doesn't is there anything else to check?

The issue I am having is it loses power going up a long hill. Then it gets hot and once I stop it just doesn't want to move after that until it cools down and then back to normal on the flats. I was planning a BBQ for the muffler if it is needed.

Hello, i have a 81 g1 and i had the same problem , no power, i replaced the top, rings , piston, head, and replaced the seals, the seals on yours seem leaking, and check the butterfly, since i rebuilt mine it runs great, i had a little problem with my fuel line, it came apart in my tank, now im on the road, i think your seals are shot, good luck
