Default G22 jerky going uphill

Maybe a dumb question but my G22 does not accelerate smoothly when going uphill. It's a bit "jerky" until it reaches speed and of course the steeper the incline, the more exagerated it gets.
The belt is almost new, I cleaned both clutches and lubed where needed. Everything looks OK except the clutch faces have slight ridges in them.
The cart is stock so far.
Any words of wisdom on the possible cause?

I would start with the basics. How's the spark plug look? Cleanish with a slight tan or gray look? Or is it more on the black side from oil or excessive fuel (rich air/fuel mix)? I suggest a NGK BPR2ES plug. Based on SmallBlocks 20+ plus years of wisdom. The BP5ES doesn't seem to have the kick/heat for older engines.

Yami's can be finicky about leaks in the air filter causing them to run poorly. simple things like the rubber staps broken and not creating a propper seal can have adverse affects. I've even found that the owner's "friends" will adjust the air/fuel mix out (to richen it up) and cause issues when under load such as up a steep hill (evidence found on premature fouling of plugs). Your air/fuel needle should be set approx. 1 1/2 turns out with minor adjustments,1/8 of a turn at a time in/lean or out/rich, from there to tune it in tight. Assuming a clean air filter and a tight airbox seal.

Also be sure that your throttle adjust is set propperly while you're there. Back out the 'idle' stop screw until it no longer touches. Then turn it in to the point it makes contact with the tang. Once it touches the tang go about 1/4 to 1/2 a turn more.

Have you checked compression yet?

Check the inner most face of the front clutch. If the faces on the clutch down by the shaft are flattened out in may be time for a new clutch. The flattened out areas can grab the belt and cause jerking. Also check the rollers inside the clutch. They can develop flat spots that cause the clutch not to articulate properly. They can also develop a slot in the middle of the flat spot that will actually hang up the weights and cause the sliding sheave to stick.

Can you take a picture of the secondary clutch (through the service panel opening)? Possible your input shaft circlip has slid toward the diff case and took your secondary out of the correct preload. It runs fine ,has smooth power on the flats? Hey Ace, when you mentioned my experiance...then "", is there something I'm missing in that?

I'm just that happy to have found someone like you out there willing to help us noobs out. Until I found this site and the likes of you and some of the other big hitters here I was completely on my own to figure out the odd quirks with these unique little engines.

In short I was trying to give you big props!

Sorry for the late reply here. My job has been demanding the last couple of days. Need sleep.
You guys are great! I should get a chance to check all these possibilities tonight and let you know what I found and post some pics. I sure hope it's as simple as a spark plug because after the lift kit and tires, that's about all I can afford right now.

I had same issue on an old beater G9 I bought. Motor ran fine, but same jerky issue. I found my rear clutch pulley had worn through the casting so just there was a paper thin piece of aluminum still between the casting strength webs so I knew the pulley had lost thickness to grasp the belt. And when the new rear clutch parts arrived with the new belt, I found that the belt had been worn almost a 1/4 inch thinner. All of this allowed the belt to slip and grab on an incline but worked decently on flat land. Now, smooth as can be.

Hey guys, I don't mean to be rude by asking a question and then running out but I'm gonna have to start over later. Work problems turned into an emergency shutdown and it's been all hands on deck and will be for another week. I really appreciate the time you guys took to help me out but it's been work and sleep around here. I'll check out the possibilities you gave me when I can and let you know what I found when I get back to a normal life.
