G2 low compression won't start
Hi All, new to this. Working on a freinds G2 4 stroke cart. He said it was running then no start. Had a bunch of water in airbox, then it froze.
I checked it out - good spark, trickle of gas getting to carb when cranking over. Does not even try to fire. Did comp test got 40 psi. Pulled v/c and exhaust push rod was off, re installed adjusted to 4th at TDC. still low comp. Pulled head cleaned and lapped valves, checked with gas in chambers - no leaks. re install with new H/Gsk did a comp test - good 150 psi. put plastics etc all back together, made a few pops no start. Did comp test maybe 60 psi. Also push rod came off exhaust valve again while I was doing one of many comp tests, but even when it on - low compression? Valves, push rods did not look bent - face on exhaust valve sort of has a groove all the way around but sealed good. Not sure why this push rod pops off. Running out of ideas, cyl looked good no marks don't suspect rings as had 150 after cleaning up valves and changing Head gsk. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

Re: G2 low compression won't start
Thanks for the ideas, I have already gone the root of adjusting and rechecking, watching valves go up and down etc. Are these hydraulic lifters? I never actually measured lift to check cam / lifter just visual. If lifter or cam were worn would that not just keep valve from opening fully? I have never noticed the valve sticking and they both moved freely when I had head disassembled. Maybe a stupid question but could timing have gotten out so valve opens out of time? Still no idea why when head was first installed I had good comp?? I am thinking that I may have to build a leak down tester to try and find were comp is going. Thank you for the help.

Re: G2 low compression won't start
Hey Smallblock, I was reviewing one of your other posts on low comp and it clicked. The point you made about doing compression test make sure wide open throttle - well my good comp test was with carb off. Just went and checked this cart and throttle cable is broken so no throttle. Must have either broken same time as push rod came off or happened when he transported cart over (unloading?). Anyway held throttle open and have good comp. So I will double check valve adjustment repair cable run for a bit to make sure push rod stays in place, then go golfing. haha
Thank you so much, I was almost ready to admit defeat. Thanks again, sure this is it. Sorry for the long ramble. |

Re: G2 low compression won't start
finally got a new throttle cable, installed - bypassed govener. Took for a spin, starts and runs great.
Thanks for the help. |
