G1 only runs in reverse sometimes

I have a G1 (I believe by looking up numbers) that is only starting in reverse right now. But it will sometime runs fine in forward and reverse and then sometimes will only run in forward. It has a mind of its own. Just need a direction to start looking. Oh also sometimes I have to take off battery cable to get it to turn off.

Sounds to me like you might have a couple of problems. The "run on" issue may be related to a loose connection of the B/W wire into the CDI unit on the rear right fender. The CDI unit would normally shut down when you ground this wire. The grounding occures two ways. When you take your foot off the accelerator, the normally closed stop switch connects b/w to b(ground). The ignition switch does the same thing when in the "off" position. This would not totally explain the "run on" but it might get you part way there. You could have both a bad ignition switch and stop switch but that seems unlikely.

As far as your other problem, I'm seeing a similar but opposite issue. My G1 starts is forward but not reverse. See my thread "G1 won't start in reverse" for some info on what I've found so far.

If a G1 it has two solenoid systems one for each direction, on the fender. First thing is to check the wiring for connection/fuse issues and then check them to see if they click when you press the pedal. Also make sure your pedal is physically returning to stop and or the switch is not sticking/etc. that can cause it to keep running. Wiring connection problems are common in these old carts, also they are wired to ground the frame does not ground so check the ground wiring first, and the two big solenoids do go bad on occasion. You can swap them and it will run in the other direction if one is bad. I suppose the key switch could go bad but I've not heard of it. Each solenoid starts the engine in that rotation direction and the proper ignition pickup gets used.

Hi kwest0425, Thank you for the reply and troubleshooting info. I check wiring and connections. They were ok and found bad forward solenoid. Swapped to reverse solenoid and runs fine forward now and does not run on anymore so far. I'm ordering another solenoid. Thanks again for help.

Hi there sho305, Thanks a lot for the troubleshooting info. I checked wiring, fuses, and connections. I swapped wiring to reverse solenoid and now runs forward just fine. It appears that the forward solenoid went bad. I am replacing solenoid. Thanks again for help.
