Default Is it OK to drill thru the frame?

Maybe it's stupid--don't know. I'm fabricating a winch mount and would like to put a 5/16 bolt thru the frame to fasten the mount--not far behind the bumper bracket. Is this going to weaken the frame in any way? I don't have a welder.

In general you can do what you want to the frame from the axle assembly to the bumper, within reason of course. Between the axles (and in the suspension mounting area) make sure you are not weakening the frame in any way that is a safety issue. Even welding the wrong way can weaken a frame.

That;s exactly what I did I made brackets using the bumper bolts, but thought it might need 2 bolts thru the frame. If yours works for you maybe I'll let this go the way it is for now. I mounted the fairlead on the bumper--so it's maybe 5" in front of the winch spool. The cable runs thru the bumper and the winch is completely hidden under the cowl. Although the winch is an inch or so above the fairlead, the cable doesn't appear to be rubbing on the frame.

Disclaimer-- This winch is untested- tomorrow I'll use it to pull the cart onto the trailer. Well see how that goes

If the frame is round you can drill a plate to fit a muffler clamp.

heres my mount, used the winch lots no problems. yet. lol the winch itself is on 2'' s/s tube attached to the frame with 1/4'' plate and 2 3/8 bolts that have held for now.
