Anybody know the inigtion coil setting on a 1997 G16?

I guess your asking what the ignition time is suppost to be? My book says dynamic timing 32 deg B.T.D.C. @ 3,000rpm. They show an ignition advance curve graph with a linear rise in advance with rpm. It looks like it starts at 2 BTDC deg@500 rpm. Then a droop of 1 deg @1000rpm. Then a linear rise. (20 deg @ 2000 rpm.) There is no adjustment for timing. Resistance check of the coil is: Primary 2.6 ohms +or- 20% at a temp 68deg. Secondary 11.9K ohms + or- 20% @ 68 deg. Hope this answers your question.

The ignitor is basically a CDI and changes the timing per RPM it is running at.

I am not really a mechanical person, so bare with me. My shadetree mechanic said he needs the "air gap distance" on the coil??? Anybody have any idea what he is talking about?

I've never heard of it being that important, I always put some thick paper between the closest point and tighten it up. Closer is stronger spark. You need the manual to know the exact setting and I don't have one for that only G2/9 that uses an ignitor.

It is the distance coil to flywheel or flywheel magnet usually. That is a TCI magneto iirc.

If someone has the manual and looks it up, does it show the timing advance curve of the engine?

If you look here see how the coil mounts next to the flywheel, much like any smaller lawn engine.

You mean the breaker point gap not coil gap.There are no points. Points are a thing of the past. Its all electronic ignition now. Been that way on small engines for years. The magnetic pick-up on the flywheel triggers the electronic ignition to fire. Even the spark advance is electronicaly controlled. But you do need to set the engine valve tappid clearence in the maint schedual.

Is the air gap even adjustable on a Yamaha ? I have just this minute finished replacing a coil / igniter on a Club Car and other than a little clearance around the locating bolts there is no adjustment at all. As a previous poster suggested, I did place a piece of paper (an ordinary envelope) under the coil to ensure it wouldn't contact the magnet while I tightened it up but other than that, nothing at all.

TCI air gap...0.012 to 0.020 inch. Have used a match book cover in a pinch.
