Default newbie with a cart

Hi folks, new here! My 11 month old son loved to ride my 4-wheeler with me, but financial issues forced me to sell it. I picked up a 1981 Yamaha G1 for 50 bucks! The guy that had it was planning on airbagging it to use at car shows but never got around to it. The top is missing, the bolts for the front cowl are gone and the seats are gone, but other than that it's a pretty solid starter. Frame is good except for the battery tray. It has one flat but came with two brand new tires and one new rim. I messed with it today and it will fire up but not stay running. Here is what I know it needs: Spark plug, tank cleaned, carb cleaned, all 4 motor supports are shot, choke cable is broke. May need a fuel pump but I'll check that in the process of doing the rest. Here are a few pics of the day I got it. I'll get some updated pics soon. The plans call for a top, rear rack, 4 inch lift on 22" tires, and some lights. Going to be a light duty hunting cart and something my son can ride on with me.

Your cart actually doesn't look to bad. I just went through restoring an 82 G1 and I don't think you'll have any problems. My guess is your fuel pump will be fine. I took mine apart when I restored mine and there really isn't much to them that could go wrong. They come apart pretty easily and may just need cleaned up. Definitley clean the carburator and put a fuel filter in the line, that's probably your main problem right now. I picked one up at advanced auto for $3. You can get motor mounts really cheap on eBay

Thanks for the tips, your thread was the 3rd one I read, alreadyh subscribed to it! It has a filter now, but it could use a new one. Gonna run to the parts store tomorrow and pick up a few things for it. Anyone ever use a universal choke cable on one, or is the cable pretty cheap?

I'm sure the universal cable would work. Mine is also missing but I haven't had to choke it to start it yet so I just haven't put it back on yet.

I think it has potential! I have a 82 G1 as well. I got 22" on it with a 6" Jakes lift! Keep the pics coming with the "fix-up"

Can anyone point me to the cheapest place to buy motor mounts. All 4 of mine are trashed and the cart will not move due to the slack in the belt. You can jam a 2x4 in there and it will go. Also, anyone have clear pic of the dash? I need to see what I am missing and where the ignition and choke goes.

Looks like your missing the dash peice that goes over the steering column. About $20 on Ebay. Click on the picture to make it bigger. That holds your choke and key switch. Check the site sponsors on this site for motor mounts!

She runs! I messed with it on my lunch break. Havent changed anything yet but was looking at it. I noticed when giving it gas nothing on the carb was moving....thats not right! Worked the throttle on the carb and BOOM, she was screaming! Bracket for the throttle is broke. She seemed to be running good on jack stands, not sure how good it'll do sitting on the ground. Small amount of smoke, but did have some blue. What I would consider about right for a lean running 2 stroke. Still gonna do a tune up and see about cooking the muffler. Here is a pic of the broke bracket I need to weld and some underhood pics before I clean it up.

The governor arm. You could weld the throttle valve open while you were welding, you don't need it for anything all it does is quiet the idle and possibly make the muffler fill up faster.
